All the bloody time in my youth. I think there were only like 15-20 lads out of over 150 in our year who showed any interest in the Boro.
The rest were plastics (sorry if the word inflames any passions with guys) following Spurs and Arsenal.

I caught my 12 year old daughter calling some boy with a Chelsea shirt on the other day " a wanker for not supporting Maidstone" as a responsible parent I told her off, but inside my head the angels were singing.

When I get told that the team are crap I simply ask the person why they are telling me as I go to watch them and already know that. The self-depreciating humuor seems to flummox them.
The other one I use a lot is to tell them that I will bring them a map so they can find their way to whatever premier club they support is. It has really riled some people in the past. It becomes even funnier when they start telling you that tickets are £40 and they have to go all the way to London and you retort that £40 is what you have paid to get into four matches (and you went to twenty or thirty the season before) and you have been to matches in London and beyond.

I used to work with a Villa fan. He was always winding us (Hammers) up about 'his' team being the original C&B team, etc, etc, and at the time Villa were usually doing better that West Ham, so we got pretty pissed of with all this.
So, one away game at Villa, my mate and I invited him to come along. We got there an hour before KO, so we naturally asked him to take us to his favourite home pub. We wandered the streets for three quarters of an hour and didn't find a SINGLE pub! Turned out, when we got back to the ground, that we'd been in a big Muslim area and all the pubs were the other side of the stadium.
When we questioned him about this, he finally admitted that he'd never actually been to a home game before - in fact the only Villa game he'd ever been to was the FAC game at Gillingham!
