I heard much speculation/assumption on Saturday, and later read much the same on here that the attendance figure announced at the game can't have been true. Why is this? What do the club have to gain by undercounting the crowd?
On a related note, although the ground was pretty full, there was still a fair bit of room in the town end, so if that really was 2,300ish, I think we could easily get 2,500 in the ground, if not 3,000.

Well that is my favourite post of the year..Quite brilliant..

It's not about the space around you when it comes to capacity it's about suitable exits to leave the ground if an incident were to occur.

Will you take that hat off!! The one with H&S written on it
And re the original post...really? You need to ask? Not sayin that the figure the club gave is false and weren't there sat so can't judge myself what it was.

Official capacity must be 2296 no? the club might let another few hundred into the stadium for H and S reasons ie to avoid a riot in car park if you try and lock them out...

It's not about the space around you when it comes to capacity it's about suitable exits to leave the ground if an incident were to occur. I know this, we've discussed it before. I was merely commenting on the apparent capacity of the ground, not the capacity permitted for other reasons.

Use your brain !!! Do you honestly think that I didn't think about this before posting, that I didn't "use my brain"? Obviously (from my post) I couldn't understand it, so I thought I'd ask on here. Unfortunately, I am none the wiser. The H&S aspect I could understand - as, no matter how big the gate (excepting the few really big games), there never seems to be anyone left outside. But when the figure was announced on Saturday, people in the crowd were shouting "taxman", so they were presumably implying something else. But what? Also, in my many years at Upton Park, I often also heard the official attendance announcements being derided. But UP is almost NEVER full! So that surely can't be H&S? So why do fans (apparently generally) think the figures are being under or ever reported?

Johny, I believe that when the ground was built it was with a capacity of 3,000, however h and safety bods decided to reduce that and I believe the original 2,226 simply came about due the amount attending the Brighton game. The official capacity is now the 2,292 or whatever it is. I think it's generally accepted there is space for 3,000 but perhaps not enough exits, plus exceeding the capacity is not something you'd officially do.

I believe that the "official" capacity is now 2,500 after the terracing at the Town End was extended and the family enclosure created.
