Well, now we know the answer - I actually lost track of the number of subs both sides brought on today! The odd thing is that there definitely weren't 7 on each bench at any time! In fact the benches seemed mostly pretty empty. I think the rule is, 5 on bench and you can bring them all on. ....and we know the team that's leading will bring them all on, one at a time, after the 75th minute, thus not allowing the opposition to build any momentum or pressure.

You can only bring subs on three times in a game (plus, I believe, at half time). So, if you want to use all five, you have to have at least one double sub. So, get ready for a lot of double subs this season... I found it very confusing yesterday, the PA was so poor that, in the second half, I lost count of who'd come and gone in our own side, let alone the opposition! No doubt we'll get used to it, but it's going to change the way the game is played. Subs have gone from something that you didn't do if there wasn't reason, to a being a significant part of the tactics of the game. Imagine the last ten minutes of a 1-0 game, when FOUR subs are brought on!!

Be a bugger if a player's injured near the end of the match, with one sub on the bench unable to replace him cos the 3 change-overs have already been made

You can’t do that. You’re still only allowed three occasions (not counting half time) when you can make substitutions
