That was Sally B, a B17 Flying Fortress based at Duxford. She’ll be back today, I think.

More accurately, over my house. We had the full display, which is more than the Queen can say! Us too, right over our back garden in Allington, then followed an hour later by some wartime American bomber or something like it. I hope you have written a strong letter to complain about noise and pollution

I used to live next to Rochester Airport back when they had the airshows and one year a Lancaster flew over my house at a couple of hundred feet. The sound of the four Rolls Royce Merlins will live long in my memory.

There’s an amazing little cafe accessed via a little lane at the back of Rochester airport, full of all kinds of flying memorabilia.

The American B17 was poor by comparison and its max bomb load could be matched by the twin engine mosquito and that was as fast as a fighter

There are some fine air museums - Biggin Hill, for WW2 fighters, Hendon, Goodwood and of course, Duxford. The latter has two main halls, one with British planes like Lancaster, Concord, Sunderland, etc. The American hall is made from concrete sections produced by Malling Precast and has amazing things like the Blackbird, F15, Mustang and so on, all arranged around a massive B52. Apparantly, it was flown in somehow, but unlikely to ever fly out of course! They does courses for aspiring Spitfire pilots at Duxford. A full day gets you a morning in a Tiger Moth, followed by an hour or so in a low wing monoplane and then an hour in a two seater Spitfire. Pre Covid, it cost six grand, suspect it may be a bit more now, if only for the fuel...

One year we had concorde, another year it was a Vulcan bomber - that bugger shook the house. It had had honour flight of spitfires and hurricanes which were tiny in comparison.

Then Gary Numan fucked off and the show died😪

One year we had concorde, another year it was a Vulcan bomber - that bugger shook the house. It had had honour flight of spitfires and hurricanes which were tiny in comparison. Way back in 1970, I was lying on the school field, having just taken my last O level, when a whole flight of Vulcans came over! They were flying so low, we had no warning - one minute, nice quiet, sunny afternoon, the next WTF?! I knew nothing of Vulcans, so to me they were like something out of the future that had just appeared in the sky. My memory is fucked, so I can't say how many of them there were, but it seemed like 5 (or possibly 7), plus two or three smaller jets. One of the Vulcans was slightly out of formation and was putting out a fair bit of darker smoke. After the planes had flown over, there was dead quiet for a few seconds, as we tried to digest what we'd just seen. All totally unexpected and unreal - one of the strangest moments of my life - up there with the day I looked out of my office window in Chatham and saw the Radio Caroline ship sailing past!
