Anyone know when was the last time we were officially amateur? Late 60s when Thompson took over, or was it in the County League?

We've certainly looked pretty amateur the last couple of games...

I'm pretty sure that during the County league days the players were payed When PBB felt like it I remember one opposing club chairman being surprised at the fact as his players payed subs each week. I think you would have to go back to pre Thompson but even the it was probably a sham (Boot money & expenses the odd envelope)

I think we were semi-pro a long time before Thompson came along.
We played in the Corinthian, Athenian and the Isthmian League in early post-war days, all of which were officially amateur, and then joined the Southern League in the 70s, which was officially 'semi-pro'. But how amateur was the Isthmian in the late 60s/early 70s? By the time the Isthmian became a feeder to the Alliance in 81, they had certainly been semi-pro for some time (in actuallity, if not in name).
In reality, we probably gradually morphed from one to the other, as semi-pro football developed and the amateur leagues faded away.

After 1973/4 season the with the end of the Amateur cup the FA no longer recognised distinguished clubs as Amateur only the AFA did Maidstone seemed to switch between being Amateur and Semi professional at various times some leagues had a mixture of both. Check Maidstone's Kent Amateur cup record. An amateur club could play in the senior cup but only a amateur club could play in the Amateur cup.

Amateur v semi-pro then = part-time v full-time now.

Just wondering whether that was the case when Invicta reformed in 93.

In the first season were not the players the remains of the old Stones youth set up and on YTS or whatever was the thing at that time

There was a point in the mid 90s when we were struggling to raise a side, which presumably wouldn't have been the case if we were paying.

PBB reckons he spent a million quid on us while he was in charge, and I don't think this was all on hiring stadia and washing the kit, so players got 'paid' one way or the other.
