The green bits look fine. Trouble is, there aren't enough of them...

The green bits look fine. Trouble is, there aren't enough of them... I still say we have played on worse pitches over the years. Health and Safety of players was the issue perhaps the referees are worried about getting sued should any of the pansies get hurt or break a fingernail.

As an addendum to the above I will ask a stupid question. Who remembers New Romney away in the County league? The pitch was saturated but the referee took one look at the pitch and one look at the 200 travelling Maidstone fans and decided he was too young to die and passed it playable . Now they are the kind of refs we need.

Don't blame the match ref, they have to follow FA regulations on pitch conditions. No doubt these are based on looking after highly paid professionals, so does this beg the question of different rules for lower leagues and if so, where do the cut offs lie?

Unfortunately, mr lots of sixes ,you are right but doesnt make the situation right. I would bet you any money that if that was the last game of the season and would affect the timings of the playoffs it would have been played regardless of the state of the pitch.

Put "oxford city totton playoff 2012" in Google images and you'll see a couple of pics from a game played on a May Bank Holiday. This was of course before OCFC got 3G. The centre circle was under water at kick off. But they couldn't postpone it - players' contracts running out etc I suppose. It was a mud fest but not that bad. No injuries that I recall, And an atmosphere at an Oxford City game!!! Oh and who remembers the game v Dartford at Sittingbourne (Lynden Rowland's goal celebration and all)?

The highlight of Saturday was driving away from Billericay and thinking I am never coming here again!

I read something the other day that suggested that it might be league regulations, rather than FA rules that mattered. The ref was quoted as saying the pitch "wasn't fit for a National South" game. Whether there are actual NS rules for the condition of the pitch, or the ref was just taking the FA(?) rules more seriously because it was a higher league, I don't know. But, as others have said, I suspect he might have passed it as fit if it had been (say) a county league game. The thing that puzzled me was there was no sand. Is that not a thing any more - putting sand down on the muddy bits?

Thought Braintree were the worst side I've seen this season. I'd be really worried if I were a fan. Penalty? At least 90%, but the player that brought him down seemed to be trying to get out of the way, so maybe that was why the ref didn't give it. However, still a foul, whether you are inept or not. Kahn and their number 2 not a foul for me. Kahn had pulled out and contact was accidental. As for captain George, those who question his ability should look at what else he brings to the side - his passion, the way he reads the game, the rapport he has built with supporters, especially at the Genco end. If he was player he had been, he wouldn't be in this league. We are lucky to have him.
