Decent game of football in the heat, we probably had the better chances but their keeper played well, some encouraging signs at least and a good turnout too of almost 2600.

There keeper is, if not one of, the best in the league. We lost at home to Hartlepool last season 1-2 at end of March so a better result but at times it did remind me of the games we lost last season, decisions against us, moaning at the ref, silly mistakes to conceed a soft goal, missing chances etc, but we held our own against a decent team who will match anyone in this league. There are a number of positives all around especially the fact that we didn't drop our heads when we conceeded that equaliser and didn't go on to lose so a better character in the team. Good away following from Pool and in good voice.

Our energy levels in that second half were excellent. If we keep that up we can expect to win a good percentage of games in the last 10 minutes.
Shame Coker was injured, he would of been perfect to chuck on at the end and win it for us. Happy with a point given the way the game panned out.
I'll never understand why supporters travel down hundreds of miles to get escorted out the stadium after 15 minutes. Aside from a few wellies they had great support.

Stones played a lot better in the second half unfortunately Hartlepool players knew how to get non existent fouls which the referee fell for !!. Excellent crowd 0f 2599 for first game of season when some supporters will be on holiday which was the largest gate of the day in the National League with a very good contingent of 340 from Hartlepool making the long trip.
Pigott and Hines, two ex Stones, scored winners for their teams.

See they're having a moan about the penalty, but not bothering to mention the one we should've had a couple of minutes earlier.

There keeper is, if not one of, the best in the league. I seem to remember that we had a habit last season of making the opposition keepah look good, so I hope today doesn't presage more of the same. That said, in the second half we did look impressive in the final third I thought, but perhaps needing just a touch more confidence - there were several occasions when I felt that Jamar and Seth (Who I thought was immense today) could have dribbled around the entire defence and walked the ball in, but instead they paused and laid off.
This is the first time I've been able to see the traditional 1-1 opening day draw - so I wonder how this defiance in the face of one of the league big shots will compare with similar heroics against the mighty York City? (Although Pools were comfortably on top in the first half, I really don't think we've seen the league champions play today - unless maybe it's us!!)

I preferred Mullings to Quigley, and Paxman did more than a bored looking Phillips. Good to see less back passes (though one calamitous long one to concede a corner) and some half decent attacking moves. Shame the naive ref gave a free kick every time a soft Northerner fell over. OS Junior's MotM was Finney. I think he had a point. Immense and calm and in control as ever.

That link isn't working because Steve cut off the end Here is the full thing that should work: www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/sport/football/hartlepool-united/matthew-bates-angry-at-maidstone-penalty-call-in-hartlepool-s-opening-day-draw-1-9285289Here is a rather strange assessment from their forum, where the poster praises their keeper for getting them a point, before saying we look like we will struggle more than them this season, which doesn't really add up! Here it is: "Fair result. Pools had the best of the first half but the Stones attacked more in the second. Loach made a couple of excellent saves to hang on to a point. I thought their penalty was controversial as the opponent went to head a ball around waist height. Getting a kick in the head under those circumstances is par for the course in my book. One good feature of the game for me was Pools solid defending, particularly down the middle so hopefully our soft centre is a thing of the past. Man of the match was Davies who was outstanding in defence and sometimes in attack! He is the hard man we so desperately needed last season. On the strength of that game, Maidstone will struggle more than us this season."

Take off your rose tinted glasses and admit we are going to win this league( sometime in the distant future). The battle from our boys was better than last season so onwards and upwards. We are higher in the league than Websfleet Bromley and Dover

Very pleased that The Pig seems to have become an AFCW fixture.

Loach is a top goalie, even if we would have won today i would still be saying that, he should still be playing league football.

I actually felt the ref had a good game. Played advantage whenever possible, no howlers of a decision, a couple of small mistskes here and there, but definitely one of the better ones we've had.
For the waved away penalty, I think it wasn't given because whilst the ref had blown his whistle, the corner hadn't been taken yet so the ball wasn't in play. I seem to remember England not being given a penalty in Russia for similar reasons against Colombia, when Maguire got fouled whilst waiting for a free kick to be taken.
With regards to the game, I'd say it was a fair result. They were better 1st half, we were 2nd. Loach had a great game for them, against a lesser keeper we could have easily taken the win. Most importantly though, we looked a lot better today than last season, so hopefully that becomes a trend and we get no relegation scare this time.
