This will not be of interest to our younger fans, but will to the oldies and Yorkshire Stone. My brother who lives in Scunthorpe, sat near the legend that is Alan 'Sniffer' Clarke in Sainsburys Scunthorpe Cafe this morning. We grew up,in Leeds, where he was of course a member of the legendary team of the seventies.

Did very little apart from score goals and start the occasional fight if I remember rightly, but what a star. Would he come and play for us?

I saw him score a hat trick for Fulham against Macclesfied in the F A Cup in 1968, when Fulham were losing at half time; but they won 4 - 2.

Sniffer Clarke, because he had a nose for goal. Absolutely deadly in the six yard box and pretty talented elsewhere too, but scoring goals was his speciality above everything else. Feisty character, which earned him a few sendings off in times where taking an opponent's shins with your studs was considered a regular part of the game. More fat on a cold chip, but 13 stone was a big lad in those days and Alan Clarke was pretty light weight for his time. One of the greats.

I seem to remember, just after his Barnsley? team had been giant killed, that the very same Mr Clarke opined that non league teams should not be allowed in the FA Cup
I have thought of him as a complete idiot ever since

He was however, an excellent poacher in and around the six yard box. I used to watch Arsenal a fair bit in the seventies and he was always one to fear as an opposing supporter.

I've seen him a few times at Elland Road, there is a huge pavilion for season ticket holders that is open for food etc before every game and they always have a couple of legends in the room and do an interview with them on stage. He was hugely critical in one interview of a recent chairman who may or may not have been a previous owner of Chelsea.
Interestingly on the way back from our FA Cup tie at Watford in 1987, Sniffer was reportedly bitching about non-league teams being allowed in the FA Cup using the rather inane argument of League teams not being allowed to compete in the FA Trophy! Edit to add I missed the comment by Moley above.

At the hands of our very own Dickie Guy

Shouldn't this be filed under the 'posts NWS will sooner or later suggest should be in the non-Maidstone United section'?
I suppose the link with his penalty saved by Dickie Guy who eventually played for Maidstone would be a slim excuse, in the same mould as Kent Online reporting on the death of Dale Winton because he once made a TV programme at the Maidstone Studios

Do you think he got promoted or relegated in that heavenly league in the sky?
