Ok, own up. After we scored, who else turned to their neighbour and nervously asked whether we could hold out for five more minutes?

Felt for the Torquay fans today - a late win like that is always a kick in the guts, and they needed the points even more than we did. Football League just a few seasons ago, and now facing the prospect of NS football next season - and no certainty at all about their ground or even the existence of their club. Also felt sorry for the Torquay fans because on the basis of yesterday they have a truly awful team to watch......

After 17 games without a win, how anyone can criticise the manner of victory is beyond me. In fact, it was almost as important that we didn't lose. Next two games, against the top two teams, will be very different as they will attack and we might just have more space to do the same. Credit to Jay for engineering that win and to Lee Worgan for important saves at crucial times. Not the worst in the league, either of them, it seems. I got a bit tired of the criticism of the team/formation/strategy from people all around me today. OK, it was shite, but my reading of it was that this was Jay's game plan - very defensive in the first half to stifle the game and stop any accidents, then bring the striker(s) off the bench in the second half and start attacking. And it worked. In our situation, what more can you ask than that? It nearly didn't, of course, how the hell they missed that open goal late in stoppage time I don't know (and they missed it by a mile!), but it was always a gamble, so that was the chance Jay took. Had he played a more 'conventional' attacking side and we'd shipped an early goal, everyone would be moaning that he had no plan B and had learnt nothing form our previous games. A win today, or at the very least, not losing, was all that mattered. With the other results going our way, that was a massive three points - it may even turn out to be the win that turned the tide and kept us up. In Jay we trust. Absolutely. BECAUSE IT WAS SHITE ? (your words) THIS SEASON WE HAVE PLAYED SO MUCH BETTER, ENTERTAINING FOOTBALL AND LOST. WHY ? IT'S AS JAY HAS SAID ENOUGH TIMES, BECAUSE OF INDIVIDUAL FAILINGS IN FRONT OF GOAL AT BOTH ENDS NOT BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH DEFENDERS ON THE PITCH CANNOT HELP BUT THINK IF WE HAD PLAYED LIKE WE DID YESTERDAY AGAINST TRANMERE WE WOULD HAVE LOST BY 3 GOALS EQUALLY IF WE HAD PLAYED LIKE WE DID AGAINST TRANMERE YESTERDAY, THEN WE WOULD HAVE WON BY 3 GOALS. IT'S A FUNNY OLD GAME AND YES, I DO TRUST JAY ABSOLUTELY !

So onto Sutton....
From memory since entering the Conference South to this season we have had the following results against Sutton;
Sutton 0-2 Stones Stones 1-2 Sutton
Sutton 2-2 Stones Stones 1-1 Sutton
Sutton 1-3 Stones Stones ?-? Sutton
Both teams know the surface, they are flying and we hopefully have turned the corner! We will no doubt be without our two Sutton loanees who surly would not play even if we got them back on loan! Pretty sure Wynter can fill Beckwith’s boots in a back three, would be good to see Coker and Phillips in some capacity.
Should be a close run thing 🤞🏼 Please correct my results above if incorrect

I have to say also, excellent substitutions by Jay yesterday. - I'm not sure if Loza for Pax was always the plan, but Pax (who other than obviously lacking confidence I thought did okay) was starting to lose his cool and I was concerned he might not stay on the pitch anyway.

After the usual period of reflection, it is interesting to see that the Macclesfield and Tranmere games generated over 20 pages of comment, while our first win in 18 has yielded just five. Makes one wonder if some (many?) on this site are actually happier when we are losing?

Makes one wonder if some (many?) on this site are actually happier when we are losing? I'm happy we won a game, 61666. It's just that I am at work so have little time to make comments. It may well have been rubbish but I have stood there in recent weeks when - IMHO - we have been as good as if not better than our opponents and got nothing (Boreham Wood and Tranmere).

Not aiming at anyone in particular, just find it ironic that the first league win in months generates far less comment than the Tranmere game and Macclesfield none event. Qué Sera Sera...

Human nature. Normal things happen, no one comments. Bad things happen, all hell breaks lose.
The interesting thing about this is that we still regard winning as 'normal'!

I even saw fans hugging the stewards in the EE! I was actually more emotional when Torquay missed that sitter a few minutes afterwards. Until then I thought they'd snatch a goal and spoil our party, but when they missed that I started to believe we were going to do it, and actually had to sit down - my legs just went. One of my best ever bits of uncoordinated pointing and incoherent shouting though. Good job Stones TV can't see where we sit!
