Plan B

I never said we shouldn't change tactics. What I can't stand is people effectively saying ooh look how clever I am saying we need a plan b, and now the manager has taken my advice. It's just arrogant rubbish from udiots who somehow want to take the credit for the team's improvement, the same people who will be the first to criticize when things go wrong. Look below as Islandstone explains very well what plan B means. I hate to point out the obvious but last season we did not change tactics in games early enough or at all and ended up drawing/losing. Against Harrow we obviously did (although I don't know because I wasn't there). Therefore the people who kept on about plan B (i.e. change tactics) were right on that occasion and can feel a bit smug. Just beacause you are a football manager doesn't mean you get it right all the time and it is a bit of an arrogant statement to say that people who watch and/or played for years know nothing about football and are always wrong unless they agree with the manager. And just because someone posts about us not having a plan b, doesn't mean they should claim it was their idea when the manager uses one. And you accuse me of arrogance!!!

It's much easier to have a decent backup plan this season since we've got players who can come on and really change the game. For much of last season we had no real options on the bench whereas this year we've pretty much got 4 outfield players on the bench each game who are good enough to start.

I love it when you guys take it in turns to knock each other about at least it gives the players and manager a break. Top of the ieague, 5 points clear through to next round of the cup with a favourable draw. Big game tuesday more concerned about Watty recovering from injury that led to his withdrawl vs Harrow.

The big difference this year is we have quality backup. Coyle has slotted in seamlessly and other than being more hirsute you wouldn't notice the difference.

Agreed but Watty poses more of a threat at set pieces.

I love the way my post which was all about congratulating the manager on doing a great job gets turned into an argument that misses the point.
To be clear, I've always thought the Plan B talk is a load of nonsense, particularly given that we obviously employed a number of different systems last season both from the start of games and during games. Sometimes changes come off, sometimes they don't and as has been pointed out a lot of that is simply down to depth of the squad, quality of squad and injuries.
Last year on a number of occasions I was run down for this opinion by people all too intent on stating what they thought didn't work. So rather than be smug it'd be nice if those who were so keen on banging the drum when they thought it was wrong acknowledged the good work Jay has done both in building the squad which allows him the ability to make the changes he did on Tuesday.
It's funny though, the people who bemoaned the lack of a plan b, who didn't like our signings in the summer and didn't think our midfield was good enough have all gone quiet now haven't they!
So back to the point, well done Jay and the boys for bringing us 11 wins from 12 and doing such a good job!

Can you tell me who did that exactly. I said those people could feel smug. However, I don't see anyone doing that. I do see people being congratulatory about a plan B being employed. I happend to agree with the post about the squad being built that makes employment of a plan B more possible. The simple fact is that people hadn't been playing too much championship manager as per your opening gambit on the subject - the most arrogant statement of the lot) but simply saw that we were not changing things quickly enough this season and are happy that we are now.

I love the way my post which was all about congratulating the manager on doing a great job gets turned into an argument that misses the point. That's Dave U being PR man again and trying to rubbish people for opinions from last season. Last season I thought that we stuck with a one-way style of play in games where we desperatley needed to do something different and, as such, it cost us points. However, I do agree with your points about depth and quality of squad.Last year on a number of occasions I was run down for this opinion by people all too intent on stating what they thought didn't work. So rather than be smug it'd be nice if those who were so keen on banging the drum when they thought it was wrong acknowledged the good work Jay has done both in building the squad which allows him the ability to make the changes he did on Tuesday. I think Jay has done well in building a decent squad. What seems to have clicked well in recent weeks is the move of Alex Flishe to a central role rather than winger role. It's funny though, the people who bemoaned the lack of a plan b, who didn't like our signings in the summer and didn't think our midfield was good enough have all gone quiet now haven't they! I was a bit sceptical of the signing of Jay May in that I didn't think he was the right player if you were intent on winning the league. I also noted, in a post two or three weeks ago, that I was pleasantly surprised by him and long may he continue to prove me wrong. I was also sceptical of our midfield being creative enough. Most of that was said before I had seen Bodkin. I will say that I still don't believe we have a player of the ilk of Rooney or Davisson in a central midfield role but we seem to be creating enough. It is notable that a well organised side such as Harrow limited us though and we struggled to get past them. So back to the point, well done Jay and the boys for bringing us 11 wins from 12 and doing such a good job! Hear, hear. I didn't think the first four games of the season were great (although we won them all). However, there have been some good performances starting with the game away at Enfield and it seems we have a squad that is strong in depth and well capable of mounting a serious challenge for the title.

If Jay and the coaching team can get their UEFA A badge then maybe Jay won't keep calling Hessentiler at Half time for advice. I think it's disgusting that Paul Butler is still owed a months money from when Bowden Brown was in charge. Thank god he's asking him and not you.
