The old Athletic Ground had a fancy entrance gate, with a sort of arch above it (if I remember correctly), and on the arch thingy it said (I think) "The (Somebody) Memorial Gate".
I regret that I don't remember the name.
I always assumed that this gate would be put into storage when the ground was sold and would be re-erected at our new stadium, but sadly it wasn't.
Does anyone remember the name of the person on the gate, and does anyone know what happened to it?

I believe he was a businessman in the town and connected to Wrights Electrical who still trade in the town.

I'd always assumed he was something to do with the club, but I can find no reference to him anywhere.
Presumably he was a fan or connected by business to the club, and when he died his family decided to commemorate him by donating the gate?
Or maybe it was nothing to do with MUFC - maybe it was to do with the time when the ground wasn't owned by the club and was used for more than just football? Which might explain why the gates weren't kept and re-erected.

I use to pass those gates every day on the way to Brunswick House school and seem to remember that at some stage they also had on them " With your help, our aim, the Football League " - probably in the 1960's. They were rather fine gates and I suggested back when the Gallagher opened that if they could be found would look not look out of place at the new stadium ! If you go to the excellent MUTV site and find the highlights of the final game at the Athletic Ground you will see them being closed for the last time. I am sure Mr. Gooch would be able to post a link to that game since I am not that good at being a Cyber Kid !! Regards All.

The 'Our aim... ' sign was inside on the main building and was put up after Jim Thompson took over as Chairman around 1970.
