And I've just noticed that I have become a 'senior member' - so somebody likes me!

I think the answer to the question is, yes!

Oh Timothy, a quick look at the first 5 pages of my recent posts shows 3 comments on spelling and/or grammar. Hardly a constant occurrence. You might also wish to note that you made a spelling correction on one occasion. I think you are showing signs of envy at your failure to be able to write messages in the style that I do. That is because my style is called educated. Now toddle off and leave the thinking to those of us that can.

'A quick look at my last 5 pages' Only when I can't sleep! Out of over 3000 posts of drivel, you must have said something that makes sense!

What on earth is "pedantic" about using your own mother-tongue correctly? Grammar isn't a set of rules imposed from above, it is the way a language works. It has evolved naturally to make the language as accurate and understandable as possible. Imagine if we all started to mix up to, too and two, or were and we're, it's and its, there, their, and they're, etc - things would rapidly get chaotic. Grammar is there for a very good reason - I have seen several posts on here written so badly that I have had no idea what the poster is on about. What on earth is the point of that? Grammar also evolves naturally, so pedantry is pointless (for instance insisting on the Latin grammar rule of not splitting infinitives in English, which has an entirely different grammar). A good example of this comes from a post of nws's the other day, where he used the phrase "utterly bored of hearing". As an old fogey, used to English as it has been spoken for the last 50 years or so, this happens to be one of my pet hates (using 'of' instead of 'with'), but I have accept that it is rapidly becoming standard English (the OED now accepts it as a variant - although they still recommend against this usage). So did I pick nws up on it? No, that would indeed have been pedantry - and pointless. Grammar is about clarity and understanding, without it we are lost. Even on a football forum. Accept...or accepted? Hypocrite. If your're gona arp on bout it do it pwopa m8.

'A quick look at my last 5 pages' Only when I can't sleep! Out of over 3000 posts of drivel, you must have said something that makes sense! To the educated, it is a quick and painless process. I have said plenty that makes sense. You just can't fully understand a well-written post.

Johndaubneyslegs, I think I love you more than I love NWS. Of course it matters - it matters a great deal, and damn those who beg to differ.

And another point that worries me about all this is the apparent approval of ignorance over education. People not only seem proud of not being able to write In their own language properly, but attack those of us who do care because we are 'clever' or 'pedantic'. As if knowledge and education was a bad thing and ignorance and stupidity was in some way 'cool'. I hope this is self-obviously madness. Would you prefer a footballer who couldn't play well to one who knew what he was doing? Would you employ a plumber or electrician who didn't know his stuff, rather than one who actually knows what he's doing? So why this inverted snobbery where writing in your own language is concerned? I think the difference between you and I is that while I try to write all my posts in grammatically correct English, I also accept that not everyone else either can or does, so I'm generally pretty laid back about how people post. The one thing that really annoys me though, is people who use "are" instead of "our", mainly because even in spoken conversation you can tell the difference.

Almost as bad as putting "you and I" when it's an object, so should be "you and me"! Unless you are the Queen, of course.

Not after "between", Dave! But that's my last word on the subject, I can live with a developing language (even though it drives me insane inside). lol...?
