Huge shame. Hasn't quite been up to the standards he was last year but a great bloke and imperious on his day. No doubt in my mind we wouldn't have won the league without him.
Cheers big Joe - the place won't be the same without you.

Big player but it's clear from the comments he made when Hak left that all was far from well in the changing room. It is highly unusual for a player to make such an extraordinary public attack on a manager (even if he was leaving). I don't think that was the right thing to do and it would be interesting to know what everyone else at the club thought about that incident.
I guess at 34 taking a good job outside of football makes perfect sense for him. There will be Ryman clubs queuing up for his services, that's for sure.

Sad. One of our best players for the last couple of seasons, and arguably the key to our promotion last season.
But he's not been the Joe Ellul of last season recently - perhaps this was on his mind? And, as Jayser says, at 34 at our level, if you get a good job offer, you take it.
Some part-time club is going to get very lucky!
We're going to be pretty fucked for the rest of the season now, though. Any hopes of a late-season/going-down-in-style revival just got somewhat less...

A real shame to lose Joe (Still standing by this point!), but perhaps the right thing for all involved. When Joe joined he struck me as the first seemingly competent partner for Elokobi at the back, gave us a fantastic partnership for those years. A great guy and player.
Are Welling part time? I wonder if we will see him go there. No insider knowledge but they are a club on the up and a few of his former teammates are there now, albeit the ground is still as it was in 1972. As for us, I hope we have some continuity in the NLS next season.

After that he's a free agent.

Farewell, Joe - you made a huge difference to our team. Best captain we never had. Best of good wishes for wherever you go next.

Thank you Joe for everything.
Are there any others who unexpectedly found themselves full time in the National League who will now be quietly contemplating an escape route before the inevitable?
A chance for the club to reduce the wage bill.
Be interesting to see what level most of our squad are playing in a year or two.

Unveiled at Sittingbourne this afternoon, poor guy… Good luck to Joe, I have little doubt he’ll be playing in the NLS or even NL next season.

It's an interesting move because Joe is obviously much too good for that level. In the cost of living crisis I think we might see other players return to part time football so they can boost their earnings with second jobs.
Something that might not just impact the Stones but all clubs where finances are tight but there is a preference to be full time. Would Joe have stayed at Maidstone if we were PT?
....maybe?
