Claims to have never looked or approached by other jobs, perhaps the esteemed car park talk lead to their chairman getting the arse? A very strange decision. I was not keen on the Ex G*llingham ferris wheel which we interviewed for the job before choosing Wheeler. Didn't Pennock wanted £500,000 in transfer funds to keep us up or something? He was uninspiring at Welling. Still, if Lovell becomes our manager I will back him. Of course. I backed Wheeler until it became clear he was destroying the spirit of the club. Whoever's in charge should start with our full backing. What transpires afterwards depends on what they do with the club.

In answer to the subject of this thread I hope not.
We need a Maidstone legend or at least someone somehow who can remotely gel with the club and the fans with no dodgy ex Gills or sacked by Ramsgate baggage.

What we actually need is a good manager who knows the level. Whether he used to be at Gillingham or not has no relevance at all. Personally I'm not sure Lovell is the man for the job, but the decision should be purely for footballing reasons.

For whats it worth, my Gillingham fc mates rated him as a decent manager. I imagine he would be on a long list that the owners examine. As daveu says we want the best the club can get

Steve Butler gets ruled out then Say Steve Butler or Smokey Gall and you think Maidstone. Say Steve Lovell and you think Gillingham, just like Hessenfaller or Scallywag. Thats what I meant NWS, not pedantically ruling out anyone who has ever worn a Gillingham shirt. If I did that Tommy Hadler wouldnt be my mate.

It's ridiculous to consider rejecting someone because of their links with the club up the hill. If Lovell or anyone else associated with that club came in and started winning matches any prejudice would soon be forgotten, that's for sure.
Good managers don't grow on trees and even the better ones usually get sacked from a job or two. It's just how it is in football. Whoever we appoint someone will come on here moaning about how they got sacked from this or that job, or how their mate says they were terrible at some other club. Whoever it is will need to be given a proper chance to show what they can do.
Some fans will always be fickle I suppose.

Not fickle, such fans who have an opinion which is as valid as yours is jayser, there is no need to deride it. Of course if a Gills legend turned up and turned our club around and became one of our own we would ALL be happy - because we are Stones fans. Just saying that I would prefer it if a Stones legend turned up and turned our club around. Maybe George might still be the man. Who knows?

We had a stones legend when Steve Butler came in with Andy Ford. That didn't work out too well. Stones legend, Gills legend or someone with no connection to either club, I don't care as long as they are a decent manager and their focus is entirely on getting us playing football with passion, skill and hopefully style, and make us a joy to watch, win, lose or draw.

Maybe Gills fans view Butler as a hero He played 144 times for Gills and 98 for Maidstone

I remember when he played for Dover, I gave him a bit of stick for being ex Gills when we played them at Sittingbourne, he came up to me and my friends after they scored their 4th or 5th goal and called us a bunch of cunts and said "at least I don't have to come back to this shithole again like you lot" We all just laughed at him and left it at that, none of us took it personally, and I would be perfectly fine if he ever ended up managing us......also if rumours are to be believed he was close to getting the job after Jay was sacked.
