Hak's post-match was less than convincing as well. "It's a learning curve" was the best he could come up with. That wasn't a "learning curve" - that was just shite. The only thing we learnt from that is just how badly we can play.

Omg that was grim watching the play back.
Stones were shocking everywhere.
Needs to be rated a XXX.

Not sure what Hak means by a learning experience. He presumably means he has no idea how individuals play so bady or how collectively how the team is so poor. If he doesnt find some answers quickly then we are going to experience plenty more batterings everywhere we go.

I have a soft spot for Gillingham it's called Grimpen Mire😁. I have nothing against Philips but he'll come back for a while then bugger off again whereas Dave U will still be here, health permitting for another 20+years I think it was young deadly who said that Phillips is more welcome than Dave U which is an insult and a half on a long term supporter of this club🤬 Have it you own way sword but I didnt like daveu's description of Michael Phillips as a 'money grabbing back stabber'. He mskes it very clear that in his opinion Michael Phillips is unwelcome at the club. Well that's not my opinion and won't be able that of hundreds of other Stones supporters. To be perfectly frank there is not many footballers who haven't at some stage knifed a club in the back for monetary gain and that includes every one of our current squad who have left other clubs for the big money that Stones were offering and most ,if not all, would leave us at the drop of a hat that included more money than we are willing to offer. I would like him back but it should be on the terms and conditions of the offer he turned down at thus club and not the over inflated deal he left us for. My only serious question would be ,why cannot he get a game at Barnet?

How do we know it was an 'over inflated deal' (whatever that means)..my understanding is he wanted a club nearer his home.. Dave is not reading the room among Stones fans. We could certainly do with him back on loan.. rather than another U23 child from an EFL club.
I never blame players for leaving for more money..this is their job.

Oh dear. Highlights show it really could have been double figures. Hard to tell who was supposed to be playing where in the back four - seemed like panic stations towards the end. Credit to Joe Ellul and Gavin Hoyte who at least never gave up. Joe was caught horribly out of position at times, but desperate last ditch tackles made up for a few. He showed last season that he can be vulnerable to a bouncing ball. Great header, great tackler, but both Fowler and Cawley offered little support on Saturday. Fowler caught in possession for their second - one he will want to forget, while though Deacon lost possession for their first, that was deep in the Gateshead half. Two touches and they score. That sums it up for me, we had no shape, no discipline and too many players were leaving it for someone else. A key difference in this league is that you cannot give the opposition any space and if we play like that in any of the next six games, it will get embarassing. What can Hak do? As we've said all along, the back four isn't right. After Saturday, not sure if going back to last season's set up will work (even without JB-W) as fancy Hak thinks Ellul and Fowler are vulnerable to NL forward play. Either way, a lot of work is needed to find a better system as even in the games we won, the cracks were there, but the opposition didn't take advantage. Right now, 0-0 next Saturday will seem like significant success. Wonder what it was that Bournemouth did? Hammered 9-0 at Liverpool, then 2-0 down to Forest at half time, yet came back to win 3-2. We could do with some of that.

My understanding is different to yours Steve and it made the pull towards Barnet even stronger. Whatever, I would be happy to see him back anytime.

In my opinion all players are grossly overpaid, this is non league football not the Poncey Primadonna league. I have no problem with him coming back but not for money than he was offered to stay. I would still like to know why he hasn't even got a look-in at Barnet who will, despite a good start, end up lower midtable. Do they not rate him as good enough for this level ? If the answer to that is yes then do we really need to sign another player who isn't good enough? Oh the joys of being a football manager.

The highlights were hard to watch!!
Cawley is useless and lazy!! Ellul is just out of his depth as is Fowler.
This team relies on the midfield being relentless in chasing the ball and putting pressure on the other team, this is because we have lesser skilled players than many teams in this league. The moment we take the proverbial foot off the gas we are too easily beaten. Hak either needs to find a way to motivate the team to play hard every single game or he needs to somehow bring in new blood, which may not even be possible! It’s going to be a long season!

I’m writing this on my mate’s profile as I’ve been waiting for nearly two months to get on this forum.
Unbelievable doom and gloom and nonsense put at the players and not enough blame put Hak’s way I’m afraid. He’s never possessed a “Midas touch”, the players found a way of playing last year after their early wobble and he should have kept it going but he’s tinkered poorly, and we’ve picked up points from terrible teams who’d look bad in NLS as they couldn’t finish (Torquay & Aldershot) but those who could finish have buried us.
Hak’s tried to justify his summer signings by changing a winning formula, but we’ve seen enough of Cawley and Woods etc..to know they need to be better to deserve a place in the squad and Alabi will only be a plan B off the bench until he realises that’s not for him as he doesn’t fit the system and goes the way of Pavey. If you were at the Boreham Wood match last year where we lost on penalties, apart from 15 minutes we were the better side….by far. They were flying in all competitions at the time, but we’d found our mojo having kicked on from the first Fleet win and this was a team that might have included Phillips and Luque but didn’t have the rampant JBW who drove us home last year. Crucially though we had a pretty settled back five (which includes the keeper) with only minor shuffles for the odd injury. If we get back to that we’ll do OK, but Hak’s got to look at himself and what he’s done and stop pointing the finger elsewhere.
Pace is unsettling us where it didn’t before. Express man Poleon was totally impotent last year against us. Hoyte needs to go back overlapping on the right. Fowler/Ellul axis restored in the centre and without Brown or JBW it should have been Vincent (wasted loan opportunity) and behind them cajoling and organising it has to be Hadler. Remember the towering performances from Ellul last year and the big wobble he suddenly had?? Mersin was in at that time and played too many when Hadler was available again. Hak had to change it back. Although stats have been thrown around, they do tell a story. Yes, Mersin has made a few decent saves and is a decent number 2, but he has no communication, and we desperately need confidence and organisation. Hadler puts out fires before they develop, he’s a modern keeper which gets missed by too many who are stuck in the 1960’s, 70’s and early 80’s and basically have no idea of what keeping is about nowadays. Sadly, Hak has chosen Mersin for non-football reasons, but his embarrassing cronyism would have cost us the title last year if Big George and Mersin had been regular starters.
Get the keeper/defence right again with a midfield shield of Booty, Corne, Odysanya/Gurung, Deacon & Christie, with Barham up top (Ghandour off the bench) with the new recruits looking on and having to work and earn their place before our injured stars come back. However, due to the Vincent shambles it probably means Deacon back as a full back with Fowole in front of him. Hak- it’s not too late to save the season and return to a winning formula, high tempo and tight organised defence!!

The feeling we got at the match was that Gateshead came out full of energy. From the first whistle they were fast everywhere - and playing like a team whose run of poor results “stops here and now”. The Stones came out slow. It felt like “we had the game in the bag, so no need to get sweaty”.
Not sure the difference in attitude really comes across in the highlights - or in Hak’s rather depressing analysis, come to that - but it was so obvious in the flesh.
Let’s not forget the lesson, Hak. That wasn’t the start of a learning curve, but it was a reminder. Every minute of every game counts, and points in the NL are always hard won. Gateshead ran themselves into the ground - and it paid off. The Stones can do that, but only when they want to, and on Saturday, they didn’t.
