I wore my "Don't blame me, I voted Remain' T shirt when I went swimming today (although not actually in the pool...). A Romanian guy who had brought his daughter down for 'Puddle Ducks' (I kid you not), noticed it and we had a brief discussion about Brexit and current affairs (as you do, when standing half-naked in the gym changing rooms...).
It was brief for several reasons. Firstly he thought Brexit would be good for Britain, then he told me, in all seriousness, that the US were behind the Ukraine invasion, and finally he said, not only that Putin was OK (I paraphrase him), but that Orbán (Hungarian PM and proto-dictator) was right to support him. Funny old world, etc, etc.
Mind you, my wife, who is Hungarian, but grew up in the USSR, in what is now Ukraine, and speaks fluent Russian, ALSO thinks that the US are to blame for the invasion and that Putin is a "strong leader" - "just what Russia needed".
It feels like I've slipped into a parallel universe...

Does your wife watch the news/read the papers etc - or is Russian TV less biased than BBC/ITV etc? Loyalty to the Motherland is one thing, but really??

Does your wife watch the news/read the papers etc - or is Russian TV less biased than BBC/ITV etc? Loyalty to the Motherland is one thing, but really?? It's not even her motherland - strictly speaking, Ukraine is. But, like so many, minorities, the Hungarians had a hard time of it on occasion, especially after independence, so she's got no sympathy for Ukraine. The most recent thing was when the Ukrainians banned duel-citizenship, as a sanction against Ukrainians with Russian sympathies. And this backfired on the Hungarian minority, most of whom have duel-citizenship. This predated the invasion by some years, but it was yet another thing Hungarians saw as Ukrainian descrimination. The Russians know this, of course, which is one of the reasons the west of Ukraine (Slovak/Hungarian/Romanian border) never gets attacked. An attempt to split the country and support for the government and war (it's often said that Putin had no desire to conquer the west of the country - once he's secured Kyiv, the east and the south, he'll be happy to see the western rump become part of Poland). But I think my wife's politics are basically Fidesz - the ruling party in Hungary. All her family are strong Fidesz supporters, and the media out there is government dominated, so the 'news' is very biased. Orbán basically just parrots the Kremlin propoganda - anti-EU, blame the US/the West for everything, etc, etc. Tonight we reached peak absurdity when she claimed that the US had started the war and the only way to get peace is for us to stop supplying the Ukrainians with weapons, amunition, etc (IE effectively to let Putin win). The Americans are entirely to blame for all the innocent people killed and injured by supplying the Ukrainians with weapons. Up against that sort of 'logic', nothing I can say makes any difference. The really frightening thing is that this is exactly the propoganda being pushed out by the Kremlin all around the world. We might assume it's too absurd to work, but in much of the world it is readily consumed - especially anywhere who have reason to dislike the US (which is a LOT of places). I listen to/read/watch a lot of stuff about the invasion, and I hear this 'argument' being parroted all the time.

As a country immense excess, it is all to easy to dislike Uncle Sam. Strange though that given well helped Russia fight the Nazis, that they should forget that and think the West wants to conquer them - by stealth or whatever. If America is SO bad, why allow Starbucks et al in to make money? And how many Ukrainians was Stalin responsible for starving to death? Ten million is a number that comes to mind. I occasionally ponder on the accident of my birth. Could have been anywhere and grateful for the many options I missed...

Back home, Tory sleaze continues. Seems they just don't get the idea that laws are for everyone, as opposed to one rule for them and different ones for the rest of us. Bojo is such a serial liar, he can't actually recognise the truth any more, while Hancock and Williamson are not far behind.

Good job Hancock isn't Prime minister as PMQ would be called Hancock's half hour.

Amid reports that Lockdowns saved no more than 1700 lives, compared to voluntary distancing as per Sweden, we now see the government doing its best to limit the COVID inquiry. The timetable has changed so that reports on the vaccination programme (which went well) are going ahead first, while support for NHS, PPE etc are put back until after the next general election. No prizes for why that is. Going back to the 1700 lives saved bit, clearly every life is important, but apparently set against the impact of Lockdowns on children's education, the economy, mental health etc etc, the value of such moves could be seen as questionable - especially when the government didn't keep to the rules alot of the time itself. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but as has already been said on another thread, we can learn from history so we don't make the same mistakes again. Seems our government is keen to suppress that, so they can keep their noses in the trough for another five years at our expense.

So, Bojo resigns and Trump faces 100 years in jail. We can but hope. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

In a desperate bid to keep his original thread going, NWS has changed the title yet again and is now answering his own posts.

So, there we go, he is officially a liar, even though he says he isn't. Which is par for the course. How could a man who doesn't recognize the truth behave otherwise? Time to lobby your local MP before Monday's vote in the Commons methinks.
