Bearsted 2 - 1 Banstead Athletic - FA Cup Pre Qual Round Replay - 17 Aug 2021
Those Stones of a certain vintage may remember Autumn 2011, when MUFC, then an Isthmian South side, embarked on another FACup season. Having beaten Corinthian 9 - 0, the next ( 1Q ) round was away at Banstead. I remember this as being a sad away day, mainly because of the dreadfully run down nature of Banstead's Ground, smashed & broken seats, no crowd etc. Stones won 9 - 0 that day, before going out to Bognor in the next round. Anyway the original Banstead v Bears game ended 2 - 2 and so last nights replay was a chance to reacquaint with Banstead and see if the Bears could put some life into a stuttering season.
After a tepid start, Bears took control of the game but were dogged, as is becoming familiar, by poor and wayward finishing. Bears Hatfull, Ababio & Hafner all had decent chances which were saved or slashed over the bar, whilst all Banstead had to offer was a break on 11 minutes which saw a wild drive clear of the left hand post. Bears finally took a well deserved lead on 35 minutes, when a long free kick from the left was headed in by commanding centre back Majoyegbe. Another Bears chance on 38 saw good work on the left by Charlie Hatton result in the ball being laid back to Barnes who shot over. Right on half time, Banstead's 9 ( Dom Tamtale ) collected a flick on and drove a good shot just wide. H/T 1 - 0.
The second half had barely started when Bears # 11 Sam Stace turned in the box and was clearly brought down. Pen to Bears which was put away by Stace himself. The Banstead Keeper, who had caught **** all during the game but had a fine voice very nearly saved it. On 56 a defensive slip allowed Bears Ababio through, but his shot was fumbled away. As the half progressed, Banstead came more into the game, although on 77 minutes a good run down the right by Bears full back Russo resulted in a cross and a shot from Ababio well pushed away by the Banstead keeper. Suddenly, on 81 Banstead scored. From nothing, Tamtale ( who looked their best player by far ) made space in midfield and drove the ball high into the Bears net from all of 30 yards. Game On !. On 82, a Banstead cross from the left resulted in a flicked header wide - the guy had much more time and space than he'd imagined. 6 minutes of added on time, squeaky time, but no real alarms, and Bearsted progress to the next round.
The reward ? Home to mighty Burgess Hill in the Preliminary Round next Saturday ( 21st ).
