At least this one won't be all ticket. Pay on the day, so much better. Nice fixture, looking forward to it. Hopefully there will be a decent turn-out

Hopefully there will be a decent turn-out Looking forward to it too, especially after today's game being cancelled. But a small part of me will be remembering Southend's attitude to us gaining promotion to the FL (they tried to stop us going up), and not letting our directors into their directors' box when we played them for the first time...

Be nice if Maidstone were Southend’s first rude awakening on the realities of non league life. Assume it’s the usual tale of woe and mismanagement at Conference newbies? Will the Elvis End barrier be making its first appearance?

Didnt you just love Vic Jobson. I had my own personal copper at Roots Hall as I was known as one of the leaders of Maidstone Uniteds notorious hooligan element, which for younger viewers didn't actually exist, and I asked the copper if I could borrow his helmet to put my chips in.This did not go down well and the idiot called for backup and so I had one either side. I will just let you imagine what I said to the new one when I wanted a wee😂

In fact there are some who aren't ruling out another relegation, always assuming they can start the season. Currently only have 7 first teamers signed on, last year's squad and club staff are still owed wages and they're under a transfer embargo due to outstanding debt to HMRC. Southend Borough Council own the ground and are chasing them for a five figure sum in rent arrears. They have no manager or coaching staff and players are taking their own warm ups. One if their minority shareholders is trying to buy the club but is in a legal dispute with the current owner. The future's looking bleak for them to say the least.

I think you have got wires crossed DaveU, the situation you quote sounds like Swindon if I'm not mistaken. Southend have Phil Brown as their manager and have some decent looking pre season games against the likes of West Ham

Too early for this to be meaningful, but if we do have National League pretensions, our players should have something to prove. As for Vic Jobson trying to block our promotion, quite right he did. Clubs can no longer sell their ground, waste the money on wages and doing up someone else’s ground, then go bankrupt two years after promotion. Promotion to the Football League was a catastrophe for Maidstone United.

The fact remains that the majority of Southend fans are not the least bit confident if a quick return to the EFL.

We all know just how hard the NL is - and that applies to EFL clubs coming down too. For most of them it's a hell of a shock.
There's a very good chance Southend will still be in the NL next season - perhaps playing Swindon!

The stats:
Since the first automatic relegation in 87 (Lincoln), only five clubs have gone straight back up (out of 27).
Lincoln and Darlington (two of the first three to get relegated - the other, Newport went bust) both went back up as champions. But both came back down later (Lincoln took six seasons to get back up the second time, Darlington went bust after two seasons).
The other three to go straight back up - Shrewsbury, Carlisle and Bristol Rovers - had to do it via the play-offs, but haven't (so far) come back down.
So, looking at the modern Conference/NL (rather than the relatively easier early Conference), only three ex-EFL clubs have gone straight back up, and all of those had to do it via the play-offs. The odds are not good for Southend.
(Usualy caveat applies with 'ex-EFL' clubs - I'm excluding ex-non-league clubs like Barnet, D&R, Macclesfield, etc - but only one of them (Cheltenham) managed to go back up the first season anyway, so it doesn't make much difference.)
