Trying to stage a coup because they didn't like the election result. I thought that was something America only did in other people's countries.
The Duchy of Grand Fenwick, at the week-end, will be launching an attack on the USA to free the masses

Too many ironies to count last night. US complaining about someone trying to overturn a democratic election by force, UK admonishing people for attacking the White House, Trumpettes wearing masks, demonstrators actually attacking the Capitol, but not being tear gassed, Trump accusing others of lying, Pence complaining about Trump's behaviour, Trump claiming to love someone other than himself...

BBC News - Capitol riots: Who broke into the building? www.bbc.co.uk/news/55572805Interesting article showing what looney conspiracy theorists and outright stupidly are doing in the US. It identifies many of the main protagonists, from the likes of Proud Boys and QAnon, yet there are still folk claiming it wasn't them at all, but left wing agitators dressed up as Trump supporters! FF's sake people, wake up. Still, Agent Orange has committed to a peaceful transition, so everything's alright now. Guess all one can say is that the debacle over the pond has moved the media attention away from the UK's mess for a couple of days. To give a bit of credit where it is (hopefully) due, highlighting how the vaccine roll out is progressing may not be the worst idea in the world, though at the opposite end of the spectrum, parts of Brisbane have been put into a three day lockdown because a single case (yes, just one) has been found. If only...

Personally I've always had a lot or respect for our 'man of the people', Jacob Rees-Mogg.
If he says that if he was American he would vote for Donald Trump, that's good enough for me.

Here's a thought for you, chaps.
To have as quick an effect on a pandemic as possible, would you vaccinate the oldest and most vulnerable/at risk first, or start at the 'bottom' and vaccinate the youngest first?
The apparently'obvious' answer is the first one, as it feels natural to want to help those in most need first. But, if you want to control the pandemic by stopping the spread of the virus, wouldn't it be better to first vaccinate those who are most likely to be spreading the disease?
A practical example - me! I'm in the tier immediately below the first people to get the vaccination. So, I won't get vaccinated until late spring, at the earliest. By then, all those above me should be safe, but at my level and below, the pandemic will still be happening - my chances of getting infected won't have significantly changed.
But, if vaccinations had started with those groups most likely to be spreading the virus, the pandemic would be directly impacted and quickly brought under control. Neither I, nor those above me would be vaccinated*, but we would be far less likely to catch the virus, simply because there would be a lot less of it around.
(*Those dealing directly with Covid sufferers would still be vaccinated, of course.)

The reason for vaccinating the old and vulnerable first is because they're the ones most likely to end up in hospital. It's more about protecting the NHS than stopping the virus. It's a bit like flu, how many people under 60 end up in hospital with it. Once you control covid for the elderly and infirm the rest of the population can pretty much carry on as normal. Obviously, just like flu there will be a few more serious cases among the young and healthy, but the majority will carry on with only mild symptoms or not even realise they have it. And even relatively severe cases like my daughter won't end up in hospital because of it. As I said, once you protect the elderly and vulnerable the rest of us should be able to get back to something approaching normality.

you are of course wholly correct daveu and what you say makes 100% sense.
just a bit concerning to hear JDL's opposing perspective, just hope it doesn't gain traction in government circles

Why does everything have to be black and white on here?? As for Dave's comments - true, if the aim of vaccination is to protect (most - it doesn't protect me!) of the vulnerable, but if the aim is to bring the pandemic under control (thus also protecting the vulnerable - but also everyone else), it is unlikely to succeed until most of the age groups are vaccinated. And that could be a year or more. Note also that there are currently no plans to vaccinate the under-16s - who, although they are the least likely to suffer severe (or any) symptoms, they are one of the main vectors for passing on the virus. The old and vulnerable, on the other hand, are extremely unlikely to pass the virus on. Just a thought though...

If not an opposing perspective, let us agree that yours is an opposite or at least a different take on things. You pays yer money and takes yer choice. Just saying I think daveu is right on the money with this one.

The key word there is the PRC "reported" cases. Only last week the authorities were welding up doors to families apartments in Dalian to seal them inside on suspicion of being infected (video available on YouTube). The same strategy that was originally used in Wuhan. My friend over the border tells me that they have an outbreak in Beijing also which actually must be so severe as it has made the news. (At least it is not North Korea where they allegedly shoot anyone suspected of being infected). An interesting CCP PRC fact is that if any city suffers a disaster (even an earthquake) that leads to more than a certain number of deaths then the local mayor iis held responsible and either removed from office or jailed if the number is big enough. I forget the threshold numbers but it is in 2 digits. As such numbers are either just not reported or heavily distorted. You will also note a recent case of an independant journalist being jailed for 4 years for trying to report on the original Wuhan flu. The sentence was passed on Xmas Day presumably to 'bury' the news in the West. Remember PRC is the only place in the world where every province 'reports' GDP figures above the national "average"! Figure that one out.

Maybe I'm crediting him with too much intelligence, but is it possible that Trump's recent behaviour is a strategy to ensure the Democrats allow him to fade into the background rather than risk further outbreaks of violence and insurrection by pursuing him for his many crimes.

How soon until Trump is arrested - or goes into exile?
I'm waiting for there to be four different vaccines available. Then JDL will be able to predict a 4-0 win for vaccines over covid.
