Find it astonishing that there are Tory MPs still lobbying for a full end to lockdown on 21/6, if not sooner. There again, they are probably the ones with big investments in hospitality, arts etc and who have full private healthcare. Presumably their rent boys, mistresses etc are being properly screened too. One paper is saying about 20 000 people flew off yesterday to holidays in amber listed countries. Will they self isolate when they return? And as they return, will they be isolated from those coming back from Portugal as they pass through the airport? With Australia and New Zealand still being ultra cautious about letting people in, our vaccine programme had better be working. Meanwhile, Israel not exactly looking good as a holiday destination, even without the option of a day trip to Gaza.

Johnson's plan - vaccine roll-out vs third wave of virus - gambled on no more-infectious new variant and no disruption* to vaccination. And now we have both, just as we all go back down the pub - with 45% of the population still unvaccinated, including nearly all the 20-45 age group (the most likely to spread the virus). Johnson's hesitation (again) over an Indian travel ban could define his time as PM. (*we have plenty of AstraZenica, but can't use that on the under-40s - and Pfizer is harder to get hold of) www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-secures-extra-60-million-pfizerbiontech-covid-19-vaccines so apart from these 60 million doses and the Indian variant responding to current vaccines, we're totally stuffed. I will agree that hesitating on the travel ban to India was mystifying. As is anyone's need to travel abroad atm - whether it be for Uncle Puneet's funeral, maintaining the family holiday home on the Costa Brava or whatever. I don't get it. I'm currently self-isolating - got a cataract operation next Wednesday! I'll be able to see Maidstone supporters' faces and defenders' slip-ups even more clearly next season! [phones to cancel op...] I'll send you a life-size photo in the post, Huw

How do you know I haven't already got one...? Bwahahahaha... Already had one bit of post from Maidstone this week - replica top for OS Junior (12 next Monday). Just reading an article on the BBC website about energy reform, saying the population will have grown by 2 billion by 2050. I really wish the environmentalists would address the elephant in the room and tackle population change rather than climate change. We're going to need a massive pandemic to keep population levels down. Any ideas? China has falling birth rates and coal production but massive increase in solar power so we can't even blame them - but like other BRIC countries bringing people out of poverty they're consuming more meat, using more plastic... finding an answer is harder than getting Greta Thunberg to hand in her homework though. www.worldometers.info/world-population/#pastfuture www.worldometers.info/world-population/ far scarier than any rising sea levels in the Maldives.

Only one that I have heard talk about it seriously in recent times is Chris Packham. On the whole it seems that talk of tackling the sprogladitis virus is very much a taboo subject.

Stopping inequality and reducing poverty will really help in developing countries while countries like ours need to learn to embrace less wastefulness. Agree that population needs addressing though (it has more than doubled in my lifetime). My plan is that all 55 year olds and above are shot immediately. NB there will be a nationwide gammon shortage

People who come out of poverty then consume more energy and meat and use more plastic. It's a dilemma innit.

There's a book called 'This Thing of Darkness', which tells the story of Darwin's voyage of discovery through the eyes of Captain Robert Fitzroy. When they get to the southern tip of South America, they notice that the native people there are all quite young. When they ask if the elders go north to avoid the harsh winters, the answer comes back 'No, we eat them.' So, no need for care homes, funeral plans, pensions etc...

A nutritious version of Logan's run, although the meat might be a bit tough. Have you taken over from Dominic Cummings at no.10? If not you might unintentionally be giving the government some ideas with regard to future policy.

Bearing in mind that young people are like literally all vegans, this won't work.

In that case, perhaps composting is the answer!

People who come out of poverty then consume more energy and meat and use more plastic. It's a dilemma innit. It's quite a tricky area and not a straight trade off between poverty reduction and pollution. I guess the type of poverty, the severity of poverty, ingrained culture and whether ludicrous wealth is reduced elsewhere as a result are all important factors (don't forget ultra rich are way way out there in pollution terms. This is interesting link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11205-020-02332-9
