So, how’s the first month of socialism going? Not sure it's socialism but we don't seem to have a constant stream of mad statements from the government. It is being marred by ultra right wingers failing to accept they lost.

Wonder what’s happened over the last 15 years that have led us to this point….
To blame this on a government barely a month old, rather than the consequences of 14 years of austerity pinned on immigrants by the media really is laughable. Thought this lot liked to do their own research

No sign of much socialism.
Pretty much a centre sounding governed by the iron lady.
Tbh, happy to see energy pay outs to pensioners means tested.
More emphasis on green/energy initiatives are welcome plus the push for local authorities to allow more house building.
Not convinced about public ownership of rail companies but still a goodish start compared to the shambles of recent years.

The problem with means testing, sensible though it might be, is that it would cost more to carry out (it would no doubt involve the creation of a new Civil Service department) than it would save in reduced pension payouts. And I’m livid that I’m losing my heating bonus, that went a long way to meeting my wine bill for a week or two.

To be honest I’m glad they’ve abolished it. Still working and collecting state pension so would have been ridiculous to get a handout from the government. Although to be fair there are some just above the pension credits limit who will struggle without it. The problem is wherever you set the threshold there will be people who fall just the wrong side of it.

As a sweeping generalisation, a lot of pensioners seem to read the Mail, Express, Sun etc. Probably voting Tory too, which may be why the previous government was reluctant to means test the fuel allowance. As mentioned above, those on the borderlines will be affected most, but would it be so difficult to adopt a simple sliding scale to obviate that? Also, the government has pledged to honour the pension triple lock, for now. Another 'keep the wrinklies on side Tory wheeze', but £200 lost fuel allowance, v a decent hike in state pension is probably more than someone existing on benefits will get.

There is already a kind of precedent here with the changes in public sector pensions where those who were on defined benefit schemes were transitioned onto a sliding scale of effect as it moved over to a career average scheme.

There were riots in Chatham Town centre last night. The police say it has left the town centre with £500,000 of improvements.
