Just seen highlights of the 1970 cup final on YouTube. Chelsea 2-2 Leeds AET, but what the hell was going on with the Wembley pitch. Highly unlikely the game would have been played nowadays. Massive ruts and divots all over the place and not a blade of grass in the goalmouths. Literally looked like a ploughed field.
Also, some tasty tackles flying in, especially in the replay at Old Trafford where the pitch looked a lot better. Extra time again with Chelsea winning 2-1.

Prior to the final was the pitch not used for a horse show ? Hence its state

I asked Ron Harris about that game and he said that there were no bookings in the replay (He was wrong actually because Ian Hutchinson was booked after numerous indiscretions) He described that they made a tactical switch to neutralise Eddie Greys dominance of David Webb which fell to Chopper and he got in an early reducer to see how fast Grey could limp
