Control the controllables. What does it mean ? There are things/events that can be, or should be able to be, controlled ("the controllables") and there are things/events that can't.
In essence. Don't worry about the things that can't be controlled but try and make sure you control those that can be to ensure a positive outcome for you.
Either that or he's talking complete bull****.

You can't do anything about your opposition having a pitch that looks like a paddy field. You can make sure you're ready to play on it if you have to. Etc, etc.

Controllables. Signings. Training sessions. Tactics. Substitutions. Budget.
Uncontrollables. Injuries. Wages demands. M25 traffic. Tonbridge's pitch. JDL & NWS.
There must be better examples.

If, under your definition, training sessions are 'Controllables' and players are, apparently, frequently 'late' then it would appear that currently he's failing to 'control the controllables'.
Time for him to go then?
