Smug from Headcorn here. I'd already decided the Billericay match was doubtful, despite the earlier decision to play it, so headed off to watch Ashford v East Grinstead instead. On arrival, it occurred to me that when my wife went out with her friend (before I left home), she hadn't taken the spare front door key, as I'd seen it on the top of the key pot in the hall. I rang her and I was right. So home I came again, and I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to find the commentary on Stones Live.... sigh.

Looking at the pictures, the local ref, not the actual one is at fault. One corner is nothing but a mudbath and that alone should make the game a non starter. Only serves to reinforce the circus show that is ricay. Well we wouldn't want our pampered, overpaid players actually working for their money would we. Both managers should have stepped in and said let's get it on. I'm afraid they have no say it is entirely down the the match officials according to FA legislation

Well, that was a nice afternoon trip to Billericay. Tidy little town, sort of poor man's West Malling. Perfectly passable baked potato with beans and a decent pint.
Would have been nice to actually see the football ground...

Sure it wouldn't have been you though.

I'm afraid they have no say it is entirely down the the match officials according to FA legislation If the ref calls the game off when a previous pitch inspection said it was playable then he should not be paid. Its disgraceful. Sunderland played an FA Cup game at Tranmere last week on a pitch that looked far worse than Billericays so if they could do it why couldnt we. We are paying these squads thousands of pounds a week to play football not sit on their pampered arses. A good professional should be able to adapt to any surface. Billericay should be fined and docked points.

It does seem a bit odd, considering some of the 'pitches' I saw us play on in the 80s (players going in for a tackle and aquaplaining for several meters!), but I assume it was down to preventing injury. One of the guys on the coach showed me some photos of a bit of the pitch that did look horrible - it looked like new turf had been laid on top of mud, so that could have been lethal to run or turn on, as the new turfs would just slide over the underlying mud and water. Interesting how ready some parts of football are to ban 3G, but there appears to be no sanctions against clubs who can't keep their pitches up to minimum standards. At the very least, after a certain number of posteponements clubs should be forced to use alternative grounds. Personally, I would go further and relegate clubs who fail to keep their pitches up to standard - and certainly not allow clubs with a history of pitch-related postponements to be promoted.

Spoke to one of their officials and asked why they couldnt switch the game to Aveley like they have on Monday. Apparently they can for a cup tie but the National league will not sanction a league game there. Unbelievable Jeff!

We did keep a clean sheet to be fair, in all honesty, with all due respect, game of two halves, loads of energy, blah blah blah

Billericays's pitch is perfectly playable. They even repainted the penalty spot. youtu.be/wdFwl11WUAg
