What this Forum needs is more scintillating, football related, statistics.
This thread, however, isn't necessarily going to deliver them. But .....
today is the 45th anniversary of Maidstone United's first ever FA Cup tie against League opposition. A 3-1 away defeat to Swindon Town.
To mark that anniversary I present the following - hopefully accurate and complete.
Maidstone United have played 31 FA Cup matches, against 20 different League teams across 23 ties.
Home Away Total P W D L F A P W D L F A P W D L F A 14 6 3 5 18 17 17 2 5 10 17 33 31 8 8 15 35 50
We've failed to score in just 3 ties, Sheffield United (A), Yeovil Town (H) and Oldham Athletic (H). Of the remaining 20 ties I know we've been ahead in at least 13 of them, and possibly more. (Couldn't find records of goal scorers and timings and couldn't remember the matches myself!) Of the 8 ties we've played since reforming and back at the Gallagher we've not scored in 2 but have been ahead in the other 6, winning 3.
Season Round Opponent Score 1974/5 2 Swindon Town A 3-1 1978/9 2 Exeter City H 1-0 3 Charlton Athletic A 1-1 Charlton Athletic H 1-2 1980/81 2 Gillingham A 0-0 Gillingham H 0-0 Gillingham A 0-2 3 Exeter City H 2-4 1983/4 1 Exeter City A 1-1 Exeter City H 2-0 3 Darlington A 4-1 1985/6 2 Plymouth Argyle A 3-0 1986/7 2 Cambridge United H 1-0 3 Watford A 3-1 1987/8 3 Sheffield United A 1-0 1988/9 2 Reading A 1-1 Reading H 1-2 1989/90 2 Exeter City H 1-1 Exeter City A 3-2 1990/1 1 Torquay United H 4-1 2 Aldershot Town A 2-1 2014/5 1 Stevenage A 0-0 Stevenage H 2-1 2015/6 1 Yeovil Town H 0-1 2016/7 1 Rochdale H 1-1 Rochdale A 2-0 2017/8 1 Cheltenham Town A 2-4 2 MK Dons A 4-1 2018/9 1 Macclesfield Town H 2-1 2 Oldham Athletic H 0-2 2019/20 2 Blackpool A 3-1
Of the three teams we played whilst being in the Football League. Exeter City ended the season as Division 4 Champions, we were 5th. Torquay ended up 7th and Aldershot 23rd, both in Division 4, we were 19th.
On a personal note I believe I was at all 31 matches. Perhaps surprisingly? its some of the Home games that are less memorable.

I was at Swindon. I remember the BBC reporter on the radio afterwards saying that Maidstone's consolation goal was scored by McLaughlin, when said player was with Swindon. It was an own goal. But it was the azimuth (?) of Johnny Maggs' goalkeeping career!

I see from the FAC 4th round draw that IF we had beaten Blackpool and IF we had beaten Reading in the third round and IF Carlisle beat Cardiff in their reply we would have a home game against Carlisle. Surely this is NWS dream fixture?

No wonder it felt like we always got bloody Exeter in the 80s/90s!
Always happy to see stats (especially if I haven't had to do the work!), but replays despite winning/losing the first fixture?
1988/9 2 Reading A 1-0 Reading H 1-2 1989/90 2 Exeter City H 1-0 Exeter City A 3-2

Thankfully I covered my self with "hopefully accurate and complete".

Only a couple of errors in all those stats is pretty good going. Whenever I post anything like that, I'm editing it for the next hour at least - and still some get through!

Ah the halcyon days of the 80/81 season and the epic three games against Gillingham. That season the Stones were the competition's highest scoring club with 20 goals scored.

They must have had trouble identifying what the entity was, was it human? was it machine? Did they ever find out? Classic. That was on a par with seeing Flanagan and Hales have a barney at the Valley, along with Coupland's goal in the same match. Happy days.

I only saw the home game (my first) - and I wouldn't have described that as "halcyon"! One of my most memorable footballing experiences was at Priestfield, witnessing the Gills defenders get a sudden attack of diarrhoea when they saw long legs Daubney running at them, away from them, where is he going? They must have had trouble identifying what the entity was, was it human? was it machine? Did they ever find out? Classic. That was on a par with seeing Flanagan and Hales have a barney at the Valley, along with Coupland's goal in the same match. Happy days. He was a one-off. Saw him actually run off the end of the pitch at Ashford once (the original Ashford), as their pitch was quite a bit shorter than ours - he just couldn't stop/turn in time! Another Daubney classic was a home game where he ran on to a loose ball, practically on the goal line, and, instead of just tapping it in, he managed to get a foot under it and lift it almost vertically over the bar. I remember Ovard lying on the pitch laughing afterwards!
