A high court ruling on a tackle that broke an opponents ankle has left OssettUtd with a bill of £135,000 the club has said the only way to pay is to sell their ground and become homeless with the possibility of folding altogether. They had insurance but it did not cover individual claims, this could easily affect our club and needs to be investigated by our owners.

Apparently the club's insurance was the one recommended by their league. Ridiculous that a player can be sued for a challenge that causes injury, unless it was malicious, and 20k for a broken ankle is outrageous.

I agree the thing that worries me is player greed, now that one player has caused so much damage to a club you may find every Tom,Dick and Jose who suffer a broken bone jumping straight into legal action. I think players will have to start taking out individual policies to cover themselves and the clubs that they play for. These are sad times back in the 1970's if you broke your leg or ankle you just got better and looked forward to your first game back with Norman Hunter staring at you with a big grin on his face .

They had insurance but it did not cover individual claims, this could easily affect our club and needs to be investigated by our owners. There's a little bit more to it and being local it has been on the news up here. Ossett Utd are a new club after the merging of Town and Albion in Ossett quite recently so they are in the privileged position of having two grounds, so they won't be homeless, but I think they use the other ground like we use the Gallagher - training and community access which as we know is a sound business plan. The huge cash sum required is for legal bills - the player is getting around 15% of that figure. The club was covered to the level recommended by the League and in fact a League spokesman described the situation as ludicrous and entirely the fault of the complainants legal team and that clubs at this level have encountered similar claims in the past but never on that scale and they have never impacted upon the clubs' finances. He described it as a complete one-off and one in which the legal representatives should look carefully at themselves.
