It could be worse... Anyone looking for an off-piste positive to take from yesterday might like to glance at the NL. Fleet had a player sent off after 9 mins and lost 4-1 at home. And are currently bottom of the table. (Cue the usual cries of "I don't give a f**k about anyone else other than Maidstone"...) Poor old Nathan Ashmore... /

I thought that the sides were evenly matched until we scored. I then expected the promised (by JS2) fitness & stamina to kick in and that we would hold out for a win & maybe add another goal. Exactly the opposite happened as Weymouth appeared to be the fitter & more motivated team. Edwards should have been subbed immediately after we scored as he looked to be out on his feet after about 60 minutes. Impressed by 5 players - Cole, Johnson, Elokobi, Allen & Amaluzor. The rest have something to prove. As others have said, our dead-ball play was awful, wasted free-kicks and over-hit corners. I think some players struggle with the narrow pitch and unusual bounce of the artificial surface. If their Centre-Forward had been playing for us then the result would have been reversed as we still don't have a genuine striker. I note that Pigott, Wraight, Pavey & Cassidy all scored yesterday. The next two games are going to be a real test. Amazing! You saw exactly the same game as I did! We should be used to the size of our own pitch by now though, and need to play Noah instead of Luke and Ibby A instead of Edwards. McClure might also be a good signing as a no10. Got to do better at Welling!

Poor old Nathan Ashmore... / How on earth were Halifax allowed to get away with that kit. Surely even a Sunday league side should know what colour their opponents play in.

Confusing mix of strips though...

More looking on the bright side:
Not all the figures are in yet, but currently we had the 7th best attendance in non-league yesterday.

Imagine what we could be getting with a side winning regularly at home.

Highlights. youtu.be/wAdHFWC0D0oI wonder if Section 4 of the Football Offences Act 1991 applies to the pitch invader. Was anyone arrested and charged on Saturday? Or would the club not like the lapse in security to receive too much publicity?

Presumably, once a Fatberg gets going, it has an almost unstoppable momentum? On the grounds of public decency alone, we can only hope that this is the last time Weymouth fans come here this season! As for the game, the highlights do not appear to tell the full picture for those of us that unable to attend, but seemed to me we weren't far away from getting a draw and at least created a few chances. A bit worrying that our left back was skinned a few times perhaps. No mention anywhere of the playing officials for a change!

So, didn't take long for the mud slinging to start, indeed did it ever stop... Not there, so can't comment on the play, but it is by no means unusual for promoted teams to start well and relegated ones to take time to settle in. As for a team with only one outfield player carrying over from the previous season, then (with hindsight) nobody should be too surprised. Hardly ideal, but there you go. Great point. 2 of the 3 the teams relegated from the Premier League lost yesterday (with Huddersfield still to play) and the 2 teams promoted to the Championship got a win and a draw. It's not all doom and gloom. I wasn't there yesterday but we do effectively have an entirely new squad, some of whom have never played at this level. Give them time to gel and fingers crossed they'll find their feet as a National South side. Hopefully tomorrow we give a better account of ourselves (mainly because I'm going...)

I thought we played some exciting attacking football and looked capable of scoring. A definite improvement on last season. Defending needs some work, but I'm sure our experienced managers know what to do.

I wasn't there, but I find it odd that the consensus seems to be that our defence let us down, when just about the only good news from pre-season was that the defence at least looked good!

It's all about the quality of opposition - you & I could have looked good at full back v's Southend Youth.

Defence didn't look awful but we did look vulnerable down our left. Pennel looks more like a centre back than a full back, but the team is still learning to play together so I'm almost certain we'll see a few changes over the next few weeks, one of which will surely be Chesmain being given a chance at left back. Still lack a proper holding midfielder, seems to have been a problem position for us for a few years now, even Stewart Lewis was more box to box than holding.

Yes to Chesmain and yes to a holding midfielder.............and we still need someone to put the ball in the net at CF, still.
The team must learn to play together quickly, and we need to know our first eleven soon - those were the excuses for the PSF performances, and people said not to panic until NLS games started, but here we are started in the serious business now of our NLS campaign and the "new team" and "getting to know each other" lines trundle on............but they will wear thin by the end of this month, given all the NLS match practise we are going to get!
These are full time professionals and they know what they have to do. Anyone who still doesnt know who his team mates are and how to play with them by the end of this month never will and will need replacing, or they will be just like last years players, who also never learned how to play with each other.
But it is early days still, so lets hope for an improvement tomorrow night. COYS!
