Someone, and it won't be me, could ask the question at upcoming supporter's evening. Then we'll have the definitive answer. Whether everyone believes it is another question that will continue to run and run. 😁 I've asked both Bill and Terry in the past, and both stated that the announced attendance is people who actually passed through the turnstiles. However it's no good passing that on to those who don't want to believe it.

Do you honestly believe daveu ? You attend regularly, you have fair eyesight and I presume you can count.

I should imagine that advertising revenue is indirectly (or possibly even directly) related to attendance numbers - given that pretty much every other business that sells advertising finds a way to present the number of potential viewers in the most optimistic light, the why would not football clubs do the same?

VAT is payable on Sales.
However the Vatman is able to do simple sums, for example, Tickets sold times Admittance charge equals sales; divided by 6 gives the VAT due. (Why divide by 6 when VAT is 20% ? I heard someone say. Well the admittance is grossed-up and includes vat) If the number of tickets sold differs from the attendance reported in the media then the Vatman is going to ask why the discrepancy.

Surely the club would not declare attendance at say 2500 when theres only 1800 in the ground, bearing in mind they will have to split the gate receipts. What would that achieve?

Not closed minds DaveU but open eyes who could clearly see a clear discrepancy between the numbers of people actually watching the game compared to the official attendance. What’s your explanation for that difference that many of us saw between actual attendees and attendance announced?

Why are so many people so obsessed with something that doesn't matter. I take the attendances at face value because I really couldn't give a flying f**k how many people are actually in the ground. I just don't get why it's so important to some people to the extent that it's just another stick to beat the club with, and let's be honest, some so called supporters don't need much excuse.

Good morning, lovely day.
Why do you say that - are you suggesting that I don't think it's a good morning, or a lovely day?
No, no, why should I think that? I was just saying good morning.
So you say, but we all know you're just trying to stir things up. You and all these other so-called supporters, trying to imply that it's the club's fault that it's a lovely day!
Seriously? I was just greeting you. It IS a lovely day.
There you go again, always on about how lovely the day is and how good the morning is - as if it was just one of those things people say. We all know you've got an agenda with the club and this crazy idea that they somehow have something to do with the weather.
OK, OK, I've no idea what you're on about, but I'm off now, gave a good day.
Good day?? There you go again, implying that the club has something to do with how good a day it is. You think you can hoodwink me with your deliberately annodyn language, but I know what's going on. You and certain other 'supporters' will use anything as a stick to beat the club with!
Dave just chill, no one's having a go at the club
Chill?! Chill?! I suppose you're saying that the club is responsible for how chilled I am now? Any excuse to have a go at the club!

Last time I did a VAT return it wasn't itemised to that degree. In any case the calculation you suggest would be impossible to do (or even estimate that closely) - VAT on Season Tickets will be paid early in the season when the STs are bought, freeby entries, concessions etc. No way would the VATman even try to derive income from 'attendance' numbers .

In our first few seasons in the county league the attendance was arrived at by me walking around the ground and counting them and the accuracy much depended on how many beers I had swallowed prior to the match.

And to think I’m the one whose accused of panicking. Seems like DaveU is the one who needs some massive chill pills. No one is beating the club up we are just very interested because we are supporters who are interested in any and all aspects of our club. Yes it’s an absolutely lovely day and looking forward to hearing about the last couple of signings from Barnet to (finally) complete the squad in the nick of time for the new teams first showing at the mighty Herne Bay this Saturday.

No one's having a go at the club? Of course not. I get that you are in no way implying that Bill and Terry are being economical with the truth. It's perfectly reasonable to not believe what they say while at the same time believing they are as honest as the day is long. And of course, in your first post you didn't in any way shape or form dig out the old chestnut about the main stand while completely ignoring the fact that when attendances are low it's reflected in all areas of the ground. Oh no no no, of course not. Everything you post is completely supportive of all aspect of the club and supporters. I bow to your undeniable superiority in all things, and never again will I seek to hold an opinion that in any way differs to yours.

Bill has openly admitted to me that home cup games he will work out our travelling expenses for the next game away and alter the crowd to pay for it. This is an old trick that many clubs do. Does that make it acceptable?
