Walking up Union Street the other day, I realised that the closed Hill Town Indian restauarant looks very much like it was originally a pub (no 102 - just a few houses towards town from the Rifle Volunteer). But I can't find it in any of the online lists.
Anyone know anything about this one?

But just remembered one nearby top of brewer street on corner that was one of first pubs to become an Indian. Can't think what that was called though.

It's not in any of the lists I've found so far - but they are far from complete or accurate.

I been having a think, and reckon the property being referred to is the one that used to sell second hand white goods etc, then may have become partly hairdresser/beauty salon. I didn't know became an Indian. And I have no idea what it was before dealt domestic appliances. I don't think a pub in any modern day times though could be wrong

The Style & Winch was the Union Flag - which was also known as the Bull and Snuffers at one time. No idea what a snuffers is/was!

I think snuffers were the men who went round putting out the street lights before electric street lighting became common.

Indeed. It was finding this online that partly inspired my original thread. There's quite a few 'pub' websites out there too - I cross-referenced where I could, but at least one site lists pub closures that go back more than a century! Just about every shop in Maidstone seems to have been a pub at some time... I think I've actually got this book, but no hope of finding it at the moment - when we moved in (four years ago!) books were just randomly dumped on the book shelves, two deep/high in places. But we are having new shelves fitted soon, so I will forced to look through all the books... My wife is under the impression that this will involve weeding out the books I no longer want and putting them in the cellar. Ha!

However looking through it again I came across a number I'd never known but it did remind me of The Seven Greys in St Peter's Street. Never frequented it, looked far too dodgy, but the building was still there in 1978 when the new bridge was opened. I presume it got demolished along with the rest of the Courage brewery shortly thereafter.
