Was it the George or Royal George at the bottom of Boxley Road? Both names for it are shown above now.
Its not been gone that long - but it appears my memory went at the same time!

Yorks - off Gabriels Hill (flats)
Battle of Britain - Kingswood (knocked down for houses)
George - bottom of Boxley road by prison (flats?)
Cheers - didn't know Yorks had gone, but then I only went in there once when it was open!
George is the Royal George, already on the list, Quite what it's been turned into is a bit of a mystery. I'm sure it was originally flats, but it seems to be some sort of office nowadays.

Is the Wheelers still there by Brick/ex Holly Bush way? Heard that gone too. It is crazy really how these hostelries have changed or disappeared altogether. But it is the changing times, and more recently i find less people blaming it on the smoking ban at last (and I'm a smoker and former pub owner!).

That's some drop. No wonder pubs are closing at such a rate.

Definitely the Royal George - see the pub sign in the 2009 Street View photo. Where was the Wheelers (Arms?)? It rings a vague bell, but I think it might have been renamed - maybe to the Ancient Druids??

That's some drop. No wonder pubs are closing at such a rate. Societal shift, nothing to do with the smoking ban, it was happening well before that - although the ban probably hastened the end for many pubs. Pubs these days only survive if they fill a particular niche - town centre pubs, pubs known for food or range of beers, music venues, pretty village pubs, etc. The old corner local has lost its reason to be almost entirely, and those few that survive desperately do almost everything except sell beer to attract customers - music nights, quiz nights, football on TV, food, etc. Sad for us old gits - the youngsters of today would hardly believe you could once choose from half a dozen pubs in easy walking distance from home, some of which would even be on opposite corners or next door to each other. But it's like complaining that no one goes to church any more. The world has changed.

So, near to prison/brickmakers/Holly Bush/fishers and pretty much behind flowerpot.

Very obviously used to be a pub on Street View - can't understand how I missed it! I didn't use to know this part of town, and most of the old pubs had gone by the time we moved here, but I used to go to a builders merchants that was round that way somewhere, and remember thinking the place was full of pubs! (Top post updated.)

Pretty sure it's not there now. And Starnes is long gone too. I'm building a raised patio in the spring and am reduced to whatever B&Q and Wicks are bothering to offer...

There were two on canning street I believe.. Hall and Co and Hall Aggregates. Separate yards but may have been one of the same who knows. Didn't know they'd gone. Housing?

As I said it was only to buy lime to mark out the pitch at Leeds and I think it was banned for that purpose in the late 80s or early 90s.

Last time I went to York's it had become some grimy drum and bass venue with DJs every night. Who would want to live in those flats in vomit alley between two nightclubs?
Probably is societal changes. Almost none of the blokes my (middle) age have a regular local, preferring to occasionally frequent one of the larger drinking barns on a weekend. Nobody seems to mourn the loss of pubs the way I do.
A small part must be costs imposed by debt fuelled pubcos. My local is now £3.90 a pint; quite an expense when you have a family and the same money will buy four tins to drink in the comfort of your lounge with 57 channels on the flatscreen.
