Has anybody been to Nellie Gerkins in town yet?if yes, what's it like? In there now. Lager okay. It's about as Irish as the team Jackie Charlton put together in '94. To say that it's the town's first Irish pub is... a bit of a stretch...

Beer is generic Irish. Make of that what you will.

I remember going into an Irish pub in oostende, where the barman could only speak flemmish, and they had Welsh flags on the walls!

Hardly a surprise in it's lack of authenticity when you think of who the owner is..

I was in what is now the Stag some years ago, when it was briefly an Irish themed pub. They had a live band on (the only reason I was there), who played a vaguely Irish themed set (basically Whiskey in the Jar and a few other songs I'd never heard of), and when they'd finished their first set, a couple of girls went over to chat to them. Atfer they'd finished talking about the band and the music, one of the girls said "I really like the crack in here" (I know it's not spelt that way!). To which the band leader replied "I'm not Irish myself, in fact we all come from south London".
Irish themed pubs in a nutshell.

On a similar theme, one of the very best ' tribute ' bands in recent years have been the Unravelling Wilbury's , who play the music of the Travelling Wilbury's + ELO, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn etc. All dressed like late period Johnny Cash / Ranchers etc. the stage talk is all faux USA style, or was until right at the end when I saw them, when the lead singer said something like ' don't know why I'm talking like this, I was born in Luton ' .

I always thought of the TW as a sort of poor-man's tribute group themselves (ELO/Beatles) - so a tribute-tribute band is a step too far!

Great easy listening though JDL, check out ' Tweeter & The Monkey Man ' from the first album for some clever lyrics, or ' Not Alone Any More ' for a heart rending finale from Roy Orbison.

Great musicians individually and fantastic together. A tragedy half of them are no longer with us, one or two more albums would have been great.

When I was your age, young Pork, 'easy listening' was a musical insult!

On paper they were incredible, but they were far too Jeff Lynn influenced for me. Reminded me of what he did to the 'new' Beatles tracks he produced after Lennon died - far more JL than L&Mc. And Harrison had clearly lost his way. As Porky says "easy listening".
