Surprised about the Herbalist. They seem to do well. As ever, you need to have the right business model and not overpay the pubCo. As an independent with food, they should prosper. The usual mixed social media reviews: www.opentable.com/r/the-herbalist-maidstoneWould be surprised if news were correct. Herbalist part of a small group of pubs which appear to become, and stay, very busy when they reopen after refurbishment. Potting Shed out towards Langley for example.
Although having said that The Herbalist didn't appear to fit their previous type of pub location, and thus customer.

Just spoken to the manager of the Herbalist and he refutes any suggestion that the venue is in financial difficulties.

Interesting. It was quite the emotional post, now gone, along with the pub's whole Facebook page. A few references to personal health and people criticising his efforts. I've always thought working 12 hours a day seven days a week, often for less than minimum wage, must take its toll.

Was the criticism from the gay community as the landlord said he was trying to steer the pub in a different direction though gays would still be welcome.

I don't know. Gay pubs must pay their way in the internet age, where it's never been easier to meet.
Just seen Rockin Robin have taken over the Stag, which looks like a good fit, with their food offering.

Was the criticism from the gay community as the landlord said he was trying to steer the pub in a different direction though gays would still be welcome. It was "steered in a very different direction" from what I've seen/heard. They were effectively trying to ditch the gay image and turn it into a family pub - but not admiting to it. I assume renaming it was the final step in that journey. If catering to the gay scene no longer makes a profit, then the only option is to go for the lunch-time and weekend food trade, with music, quizzes, etc in the evenings (still a lot of offices in that area and the pub has a good, central location, but far enough away from the centre of town). But it doesn't really feel like a 'local', isolated as it is, and without a lot of housing around (although, with the number of flats being built and converted in that area, that's changing fast). And I suspect that what locals there were originally were driven away by the years as a gay pub, so it's had to effectively start from scratch. Also, only a brief stroll to the Rifle Volunteer...

As somebody who has no problem bearing a grudge for decades, I don't care if the Rifle Volunteers is serving gold-plated beers from Belgium, Holland and beers from any other region of the earth more interesting than the tedious brown swill so many old people opt to consume, I won't go in there while I've got a hole in my a**e, because I will always associate it with Wendy Marlow. I'd rather walk a bit further to the Duke of Marlborough.

I'm sure there's some sort of get out clause where pubs are concerned, though, even for a grudge as serious as this one.
