Unconfirmed rumours that the HERBALIST on Pudding Lane is in trouble.

Further to my post about the White Horse, they are currently on a temporary licence and are only allowed to open 5 nights a week at the moment. I believe they are currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so bang goes the quiz night on the first Tuesday of every month, which must have been a decent earner for them since it was always well attended. I still can't get my head around the idea that someone can move near a pub and then object to its licence when it does pub things.

I noticed the White Horse was shut several times I walked past. The Eagle is closed for repairs, with the promise to reopen, but no date. Word is tenants at the Swan are moving on, for the usual reason; no money to be made from SN. Every time they close a local, I boycott their very average beer.

It's not like it's a rowdy pub. Quite the opposite. And they've gone down the Sunday roast route. If they go, that's a big gap between pippin and town.

Surprised about the Herbalist. They seem to do well. As ever, you need to have the right business model and not overpay the pubCo. As an independent with food, they should prosper.

Might be its size that's against it, you've got to get a hell of a lot of customers in on the busy days, just to keep a place like that going. I suspect the location doesn't help either, now Earls St has become the main eating hub, pubs and restaurants not close enough will suffer. And the High Street end of Pudding Lane is too far for the average fat chav to waddle. Also, I suspect we may have passed 'peak eating place' in Maidstone. These things always bubble and burst, and it will be the ones distant from the centre and/or that struggle to make a profit that will go first.

I really can't understand how an incomer can possibly object to a main road pub that's been there years. The council should tell them where to go. How many more out-of-town pubs can we afford to lose?? There was a similar problem with the Walnut Tree in Tonbridge Road 20-odd years ago - new neighbour moved in and objected to the noise of the regular weekly music night. But the regulars got together and petitioned the council to ignore it - and won. Not been there in years, but it used to be a regular thing for me, and the bands they had on were usually pretty good - probably the best pub music night in Maidstone at the time. Sad to hear about the Swan, the new couple that took it over really made a difference. It went from a rather strange pub, where non-regulars weren't made to feel welcome to a nice friendly family local. I hope they stick it out and make it work.

The Eagle is open tomorrow after a quick refurb.
Saw something about the Walnut Tree being listed as an Asset of Community Value.
Maybe I go past at the wrong times, but the White Horse never looks busy. Unlike the Pippin.

Not surprised about the swan. Always reminded me of that pub in American werewolf in London with some of the locals

You have to wonder why Shepherd Neame keep the Dragoon open. Fixed it for you.
