Sadly, I think the main theme of this thread is the 'used to' drink in this pub or that pub. Not many people pop out to their local now for a couple in the evening or on a Sunday lunchtime. Times have changed. I miss The Blue Door, or whatever it was called after that, but did spend much of my hard earned wages in The White Horse at Otham which was always a tad more upmarket than the Blue Door, The One and Only and The Century.

Over 2 years since The Plant closed, what an absolute stitch up that situation was.

Landlord barred all the regulars so as to to show that takings had gone down and that the business was no longer viable.
This meant that the "sole use" thing that was attached to the premises could be lifted and the land used for property development.

When our local was threatened with closure, Facebook was full of outraged comments from people who I don't remember ever seeing in there. They usually said they would go in if it was a nicer atmosphere. Fast forward a few months, a new experienced landlord has improved things no end. Still waiting for the FB commentariat to actually walk through the door and order a drink. People just don't go out any more.

No they don't. A former Plantation landlord has The Bell, but he's not the one who ran it down.

i was in the bell a few friday nights ago, was a good night and the place was packed.
I remember in the mid 1990s, the plant was very clicky and down right hostile to anyone under 50 it seemed!
I remember being asked for ID almost every time i went in there, even though i had my 21st birthday in there earlier that year!

In it's heyday it was an amazing pub. Sadly Whitbread sold off all of their properties that weren't attached to Premier Inns and the much maligned Enterprise snapped it up. Was pretty much downhill from there.

I heard a radio four documentary about Whitbread a little while ago and it said even their beer is brewed under license by someone else now!

Anyone know what's happening to the 'Vic' (next to Maidstone East)?
Last time I was down there (2 or 3 weeks ago), they were preparing massive blocks of concrete that looked like they might be the bases of some pretty serious scaffolding.
One pub I won't miss. Only went in there once and it was like something out of a wild west film - everything went dead quiet as I went in and everyone turned and stared at me. The barman ignored me completely, and in the end I had to ask to be served - then a couple of the dodgiest characters I've ever seen inside a pub watched me the whole time I was drinking. Quickest pint I've ever drunk!
