I fear bloody flats, yet again. The coming of the one-way system effectively meant the end for this bit of Maidstone - the Pilot was the last of the old businesses on this stretch to go under. And, at 260k, it’s hardly expensive – our tiny Victorian mid-terrace is worth more than that! Although I still don't understand why it closed - lovely beer, lovely pub, easily my favourite. It clearly didn't get enough customers because of the very low footfall in that area, but it had a loyal bunch of customers (not all local), and could easily have built its trade by emphasising its history and the fact that it was the only Harvey's pub for miles. But, it wasn't to be and I suspect no one these days will want to take the risk of reopening it and trying to build up trade. And, to be honest, for all its appeal and history, the fact that it was covered in dust and grime from all the traffic and you could easily walk past and not even notice it if the lights weren't on didn’t help. Still, the Little Gem survived when it looked finished, so anything is possible. Perhaps Goachers will do the decent thing? (Although I much prefer Harvey’s beer!) One odd thing from the blurb though - they don't mention that this 'building' is actually two buildings. The one on the right used to be a shop, and was taken over by the pub (ages ago), if you stand back and look at it, or if you move from one part of the pub to the other, it's quite obvious, but I knew people who had drunk there for years and didn't realise!

Flats Flats and more flats! Did I see the Swan down by the prison wall is now flats ?! Still being converted. It was empty for ages, now it's taking ages to convert it. Same with the Cricketers on Mote Road - empty for ages. There's obviously no rush to do these conversions - maybe they make more money that way?

If the housing market is slow it makes absolute sense to delay.
St Peter’s Village got approval for 900 homes just before a downturn, so Trenport banked the land for seven years before building.
The market is rigged so the big operators make their profits from planning permission as much as building much needed homes.

Agreed, though there is nothing saintly about Peter's Village. It is named after the former cement works of one Henry Peters.
