Seeing as Britain has been a mutlicutural mix, for at least the last two millenia, and from William the conqueror until the Edward I our monarchs all had Norman French as their first language.
Couple that with Catholism until the reformation being preached only in latin unless you wanted to be branded a heretic as was poor Thomas Hitton burnt in Maidstone at the archbishops palace for bringing an English translated bible into the country.
There is a hint of continental influence on the English language. :-D

Mmmm, everyone should know we've not lost to the french Ah - so we're forgetting about the last 24 years (post 1429)........ Elaborate dear fellow. Can't mean the American stuff. Logistics lost that for us and those naughty privateers changing flags when it suited them.

Elaborate dear fellow. Can't mean the American stuff. Logistics lost that for us and those naughty privateers changing flags when it suited them. Once Joan of Arc appeared there was a French revival, beginning with victory, over the English, at Patay (1429).This was followed by dissent within the English noblilty, which led to Burgundy changing sides (1435).The French then developed their military, and re-took Rouen (1449), and defeated the English at Formigny (1450). Gascony then surrendered, in 1451, and the English were again defeated at Castillon (1453), which (effectively) brought the actual conflict to an end, although the two countries remained formally at war for another twenty years.
So we've never lost to the French, eh?......
We lost only after we 1 got fed up with winning and two we had the unbelievably incompetent Henry VI on the throne. Anyway your just jealous of our monarchy but you dont need to be as Elizabeth II is the 23rd great grandaughter of Henry II Duke of Normandy Anjou and Aquitaine then theres Henry V who was promised the French crown which passed in perpituity down the English line and as you lot lopped of the heads of your Monarchy the next in line to the French throne is Elizabeth Queen of England Wales Scotland, Head of the common wealth and Queen of France HURRAH!

Well we did have kings before then lol but he was only duke of normandy and vassal of the French King though in reality like many French dukes were more powerful than the king himself. It was an incredible victory and that a force of 20000 was able to take over the country as it did was huge achievement. However while doing homage to the French king the dukes were fiercly independant.
But the victory at hastings was a close run thing as almost all medieval battles seem to have been.
So then, as now and we did in the 100 years war our Monarch is your Monarch welcome to the United Kingdom and I'm particarly glad to welcome Calais home lol
