Just realised my own error. It wasn't England then, just a dog's dinner of Saxon and Viking bickering.

Bit harsh on the kingdom of Northumbria, the Vikings were quite nasty and were handing out Chinese burns and wedgies to all and sundry, which upset the monks on lindisfarne My favourite king would be Edward I, kept the sweaties in control

Edward III Seems to be recognised as the perfect King by historians these days. Has to be a contender.
Who is the worst in our history for me there is lackland -King John, Edward II Richard II Henry VI and of course Charles I simply for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

I think it depends on how you define success. If you go for logevity it has to be Victoria. She spent so long on the throne her royal bottom must have been very numb. For shear change and reformation it think has to be Henry VIII. Never before has one man done so much for the National trusts collection of ruined abbeys. That and walking away from the Catholic Church because he couldn't do what he wanted. The making of what we know to be the modern Royal Navy. The creation of the device forts to try and stop and Spainish and French invasions.

Queen Anne ( 1665 - 1714 ) was, allegedly, of such size by the end that she was buried in a square coffin.

Reports of men on the battlements shouting and acting like maniacs wearing black n white stripes! The tougher troops wore red and white stripes.

One thing you and I do have in common is an historical dislike of those two colours.
Particularly when patterned like deckchairs
