A thread for all things historical and a source of information... Until corrected. I'll kick it of buy asking, Julius Caesar was in my opinion the greatest ruler and conqueror of all time. But was he fundamentally any different from Napoleon for his ideologies?

Julius Caesar: "In 2000 years I will be remembered as the greatest ruler and conqueror of all time, and will have a tin of dog food named after me - for small, yappy type dogs"

I believe Napoleon was a far better strategist than Wellington. Greatest land victory has to be Henry V at agincourt. At sea Nelson for Trafalgar.
Ceasar's legions swept all before them as did the Wermacht in 1939-40. All used strong effective units as they hadn't been before.

Our least remembered King is Henry II yet he was one of our most important and best.
Only remembered wrongly for having the royal pain in the arse Becket murdered in the cathedral.

Amazing how some of Napoleons Ideology is still relevant now. Have to admit to being ignorant of Ceasar's

And that was a close run event. Both generals kicked all other opposition aside with ease and drapped themselves in glory. If nelson hadn't beaten the French and Spanish combined fleets, that would have been our downfall with 300,000 French troops massed in northern france ready to invade.

Absolutely vital victory and incredibly bold to drive in as he did against a superior force with so much riding on it

Two pronged attack on the flanks and 3hrs before the tail end ships caught up with hms sovereign and HMS victory

Two pronged attack on the flanks and 3hrs before the tail end ships caught up with hms sovereign and HMS victory Certainly seemed mad but achieved all he wanted to do allowed him to close break the enemy line and bring all guns to bare an the enemy at once at point blank range. For me it was a stroke of genius given the conventional methods adopted at the time but one hell of a gamble and Sovereign and Victory both took a hell of a beating in the process

Here's some history. The Welsh have been oppressed by the english for centuries. It may explain why we are such an angry bunch.
Oh the Earl of Richmond once landed his troops on a small beach off Dale Head in Pembrokeshire and walked them to Bosworth for a fight. which he won.
