I remember that cup final well, it remains right up there amongst the most ludicrous penalty award ever.

In the "Yellow Kop" there was a Belgium flag, I'm assuming due to location and ease of travel? Do you get many Belgium/English watching as the pass through?

Hi, ( Limey ? ) Calais. Thanks for taking so much time and trouble to share your knowledge and obvious love of 'Your Team ' with us Maidstone United followers, wherever we are. Your post was the only one that gave me an idea, or any answer, to my question about what level your team would be in English Football compared with The Stones. I guess 1 or 2 steps further up ? From your description of what happens ( or happened in the past ? ) in French football even you guys don't know what level you are at? The Stones have gone through a lot of good and bad times over the years - much like any football team in the World, I guess. For 25 years they were Nomads playing their Home games at someone else' s ground in Kent with a 'Hard Core ' of 250 following. Last season they finally came back home to The County Town of Kent after much effort ( and money )to a little new stadium with a capacity of just over 2000 but with a state of the art 3g pitch used by 40 odd MU Community teams. 1st Team only averaged 1700 last season - but that will get better with practice !! Should your team and supporters come for a return game I am sure you will welcomed with open arms by 'real' Stones fans - in fact I think that they would probably give you a tour of all the local pubs as well so watch out!!! Great post from you thanks - I wish a Stones Fan would post such knowledge about our teams history ??!! Last time I went to Calais they had a Floral Clock in the Town Square - I guess times have changed though ? Regards.

What a great thread and a very interesting history of Calais, I can only hope you somehow pay off your debts quicker than anticipated and start climbing back to your rightful position, I thoroughly enjoyed the game and also the stadium and look forward to seeing you chaps next year at the Gallaghers, I'm not sure our burgers will compare to the lovely baguettes we had at your place.

Thank you calaisangleterre! The flag makes sense now! I spent the weekend in Grand-Fort-Philippe can't wait until we go back in a couple of season. If you weren't aware you can watch highlights of the game here www.mufctv.co.uk/newsite/?p=1731

Calaisangleterre, a few years back Maidstone played a friendly against a side listed in our records as Olle Plagge; I was wondering if that could be Oly Plage, just south of Calais? We were very much a local amatuer side at the time.

Quick update, for the interested.....Tonights result Belarus 2 - France 4 (Ribery 47' [pen] 64', Nasri 70', Pogba 74'). Les Bleus are now level on points with Spain, but they have a game in hand. However, the result does mean that second place in the group (I) is secured. Was the Ribery who played for Calais a relative of Franck Ribery ?.

I will have to look out for that shirt, I will be cheering on Newcastle sorry I mean France against Finland and hope that Georgia who happen to managed by an ex Newcastle player Temuri Ketsbaia turn Spain over, if you fancy a laugh look on you tube of him scoring a goal for Newcastle and going absolutely mental
