Almost inevitable that someone somewhere will have too much lemonade and make a dick of themselves. I'm sure Calais has seen worse, though. You need to be very rich to get drunk in French bars, the price of beer is twice the price it is here!

this could be the beginning of another 116 years of nicking towns, ransacking ports and a severe amount of whipage.

Surely the authorities haven't allowed you a passport, Andy? Not after that drunken incident in Vietnam with the stray dog and half a pound of radishes?

Not after that drunken incident in Vietnam with the stray dog and half a pound of radishes? I'm off to Vietnam soon and could do with some recommendations. Care to elaborate?

anyone on this forum with knowledge of good places to eat and drink in Calais? we will have a few hours prior to the game and several hours afterwards to sample some local hospitality so any suggestions would be gladly received.

I used to go to Calais town a couple of times a year, but it has really been going downhill a lot lately, like many of the coastal ports, along the French and Belgian coastline. Last time I was there was august 2011, and I found that most of the places I used to eat and drink in were closed down or closing down! there is an Irish pub near the theatre, called LE GALWAY PUB (if it still there) but as for the actual French bars and cafes, I am not sure what is there still..........

I used to enjoy Au Cote d'Argent, facing the beach, but it's been a few years. The food was good (nearly all fish), but even better was the welcome from Madame - traditionally surly, she clearly hated English tourists, but it restored one's faith in old-fashioned stereotypes!

The square in the middle with a standalone tower on it, row of serviceable restaurants there. (Edit now got Google Maps up) - place d'Armes, rue de la Mer going north from there, rue Royale going south, loadsa restaurants. And yes even the odd "pub" for those who are feeling homesick and don't want to eat / drink any of that foreign muck!
