Thurrock's chairman said the player should have told them he was suspended but didn't know because he was in prison at the time.
Doesn't really sound as if they've got a leg to stand on. the same player also tried to sign for Harlow Town. They carried out the most basic of checks, i.e. looking on the Essex FA website, where the information was readily available, so there's not really any excuse for Thurrock.

Even though they checked with the Essex FA who told them he wasn't suspended?! There's not really any excuse for the FA

Quality piece by their chairman who pretty much confirms they did some checks on the player concerned, its a real mess, mind you a player who has just came out of prison should have set alarm bells ringing

Yes the information is there now, but *allegedly* wasn't previously....
The fact this caught out another couple of clubs tends to back that up.

Still doesn't answer why the county FA didn't tell them he was suspended when asked

Sorry, no sympathy from me. Whether they are hard done by or not, their actions in holding to ransom 71 innocent clubs, several hundred players and thousands of supporters are totally unacceptable. In fact, if the start of the league is delayed, the 71 clubs should get together and sue them for loss of earnings, after all we still have players to pay, and it's not our fault they made a mistake and are now paying the price for it. The loss of three points is hardly a draconian punishment, and they only have themselves to blame for finishing low enough for it to relegate them.

The mistake of asking the FA if a player was suspended, and trusting the answer?

The mistake of asking the FA if a player was suspended, and trusting the answer? If Thurrock have a email saying the guy was not on the Sine Die list then they are okay but anything this short of this well the loss of three points is about right for not not making sure...

The mistake of asking the FA if a player was suspended, and trusting the answer? Even if that's true, and it's only their word for it, it still doesn't give them the right to screw up everyone else's season. Let them sue the league if they like, but let the rest of the clubs get on with their season. There's absolutely no reason why 71 innocent clubs should have to suffer because of Thurrock's reprehensible behaviour.

If it's true, surely it's not them screwing up everyone else's season, it's the FA?

If it's true, surely it's not them screwing up everyone else's season, it's the FA? Thurrock broke the rules and got deducted three points. Ignorance has never been an acceptable defense in UK law. The same thing happened to AFC Wimbledon a few years ago over international clearance for a player who'd transferred to them from another English club having previously played in the League of Wales. The lost points cost them promotion that year. As I said, no sympathy from me, in fact I wouldn't care if the ended up going out of business. What they are doing is nothing short of blackmail.
