We had the best chance in years and maybe our only chance to win the world Cup and he bottled it with ultra negative tactics in the semi. The players didn't lose that game Safegate did and should have been out on his ear the following day. He wasted the talented players at his disposal as he will again next month. Anyone can beat no hopes to qualify but when he comes up against the best he will be clueless again. If you are referring to the Qatar World Cup, I'm intrigued to know what tactics Southgate used in the semi? We didn’t get to the Qatar semi. Sword will be referring to the Russian WC when we lost to Croatia in the semi having only had to beat Sweden and Colombia in the knock outs. Acknowledged by most as the easiest and best run to a World Cup final we have had since winning it

Italy were there for the taking yet we went ahead and the sat back and allowed them back into the game. And as for bringing on subs for the shootout who’d sat on the bench for 110 minutes, it beggars belief.

I don't think we should read too much into this season, especially where George is concerned. He did fantastically, especially as it was his first ever managerial season, but he initially struggled to put together a decent squad (remember, we nearly started the season with Earle in goal) - hence the more or less constant chop and change of players. The end result was a squad that overall played OK, but struggled to do better. The occasional superb performance was more than outweighed by the games where we couldn't score for trying (and others where we didn't even seem to be trying). We did well to get up to 2nd by mid-season, but couldn't hold onto that position. And, not only were we never a serious threat to Yeovil, but we even failed to challenge teams like Chelmsford or Worthing - ultimately losing our chance of promotion as a result. Overall, George did very well for his first season, especially our record breaking Cup run, and he more than achieved his targets. But he was forced to do it with a less than ideal squad, that he constantly needed to alter - and a squad who (mostly) weren't suited to going up to the NL, and probably weren't even really up to another season in the NS - especially if the target was to go one better and get promoted. So, concluding that George is "ruthless" on just this season, or that most of the squad should have been retained, is a false perspective. He did what he had to do, given not much to start on (remember where we were this time last year), and, learning the ropes as he went, he built a squad that did the job, but no more. Next season, we'll see what he is really capable of. Mmmmm................. I love your comment "O verall, George did very well for his first season, especially our record breaking Cup run, .....................But he was forced to do it with a less than ideal squad, that he constantly needed to alter - and a squad who (mostly) weren't suited to going up to the NL, and probably weren't even really up to another season in the NS. Fair Point, JDL. JDL - that post was so well considered and insightful that it has made me rethink my position on George being ruthless. It makes sense looking at it from the point of view that he did what he had to do, given not much to start on and, learning the ropes as he went, and that he built a squad that did the job, but no more. Makes sense. Lets hope you also as sage and wise in believing that next season, we will see what he is really capable of! I also hope along the way we develop or get in some new Stones legends who stick around for more than a year and become longer lasting fans favourites, but maybe those days have indeed LONG GONE!

No we only reached the quarter finals in Cattargh when at least we were not so negative but still allowed Giroud to much space and Kane missing a penalty but I was talking about the Croatia game 4 years earlier when Safegate bottled it by playing too defensively against a team that was there for the taking. We have the talent to win the Euros but Safegate is not the man to do it,I'd love however to be wrong and have a face full of egg.

Even as a player he bottled the penalty shootout in 96.

The bottlers were the f**king cowards who said no! Ince, Adams, Anderton, Mcmanaman. 3 midfielders and an experienced defender.

Next season, we'll see what he is really capable of. What ? We beat Chelmsford home and away. Drew away at Yeovil and beat them at home. Spanked Worthing at home and got spanked back. It was the silly little games that cost us Marathon, not a sprint - they both ended up above us, and one of them knocked us out of the play-offs.

Just ignore how he has the team playing. ignore how the players genuinely look like they are proud to play for England again. He has a better win ratio than Alf Ramsey ffs. He's brought the players together, Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool players all happy to play together, no divisions in the squad. He's done very well, if he wins this tournament, he will go down as possibly the best England manager of all time. But apparently its his fault we lost when he was a player and missed a pen (not Venables fault). And its his fault as a manager (not the players) when we lost a final on penalties.

Italy were there for the taking. But we went negative and allowed them back into the game. I could live with that but then he brought on two players for penalties who’d sat on the bench for the whole game and most of extra time. It doesn’t take a tactical genius to work out what the consequences might be when your first kick of the ball is a penalty with the outcome of the game resting on it.

I've always liked Southgate but I do think it's true he can play too 'safe'. If he finishes his stint as England manager without silverware I would consider it a failure. I know this sounds strange considering we hadn't won anything for 50 years before him but we have never had a better group of players to choose from, including the best midfield in international football imho.

. Even as a player he bottled the penalty shootout in 96. He didn't bottle it in 1996. He just took a penalty and missed. If he'd bottled it (i.e. not done something because of fear of failure) he would not have stepped up. I don't see any players who miss a penalty as bottle jobs because they stepped up and tried.

Well at least we have Sam Corne signed up.
How many others ?
A big fat ZERO.
For comparison purposes, Dorking Wanderers have already signed 17 players for their first team squad for next season.
