Maidstone needs:
1. A ring road.
2. A major theatre/concert venue.
3. Riverside leisure.
4. More trains to more London stations.
5. Affordable family housing.
Maidstone doesn't need:
1. More nightclubs.
2. Flats that will be future slums.
3. Aggressive drunks and beggars.
4. Arriva.
5. New pavements.
What would be on your lists?

Sorry Sword, but I couldn't agree with you less. If you read John's book you'll see there was violence at matches in the 1890s and the the 1980s. It's nothing new and to blame the town's problems on Londoners and Eastern Europeans is sad. Sorry to disagree with you but members of my family feel they are no longer safe walking around Maidstone especially alone something they never had a problem with a few years back. They say the same of Chatham as well. It doesnt affect me but I listen to others and the stories they tell me are quite frightening especially for women. Now I know there will be women who say that this is not so but these women live with it everyday and are hardened to it,used to it but for infrequent visitors it can be a worry. More and more of my family now do their shopping on line to avoid our town centres which is why more and more shops are going to the wall. I dont frequent Maidstone of an evening now that I have moved away but when I did I was openly offered drugs on the streets whilst the police sat in their nice warm cars on jubilee square, they need to get out in numbers and get things sorted that's what you are paying your council tax for. I can see the same thing is gradually happening in Tonbridge which in years to come will probably be the London borough of Tonbridge with its excellent rail connections, let's face it London transport buses now travel as far as Sevenoaks,so I am told, and that is only 10 minutes down the road. Will Brexit make a difference? I hope so we need foreign workers but we dont need the scum that come with them so keep the nice hard workers who want to make a future for themselves and their families but wheedle out the criminal aspect and get rid of them before it's too late.something needs to be done or Maidstone will end up a filthy toilet like so many other towns across the country and that would break what is left of my already shattered heart. Sigh this does get tedious. I've was in Maidstone a week or two ago and saw nothing threatening. I heard no foreign accents. Oh and if people are criminals they can be deported. Rather than tar every Eastern European why not complain about the dangerous and irresponsible cuts in police numbers. Virtually all of the Brexit protagonists have supported it (including the current hero, Alex Johnson). While there is not much research on the subject, two studies on Eastern European immigration to the UK and its effects on crime found that it was minimal. www.google.com/amp/s/theconversation.com/amp/immigration-and-crime-is-there-a-link-93521Incidentally, this huge incident in Maidstone on Saturday. Where can I read up on it? I can't find it

But sword does have personal experience of being openly offered drugs on the streets of Maidstone presumably by 'foreign scum', whilst the police looked the other way.
4 generations of my family (the first of whom can be labelled as immigrants) have lived in Maidstone for 75 years, but I just don't recognise what sword describes.

Assume he was talking about the other Saturday when someone was killed after a large fight outside the gallery club rather than last night No on Saturday night as in last night a number of arrests were made involving drugs and weapons. Brendan Donnelly has video footage on Facebook. Nws if you found no foreigners you couldnt have been looking very hard and if you heard no foreign languages then you are deafer than I am. I have not tarred everybody as I have said responsible hard workers are welcome it's the scum element that needs to wheeled out. I know we cannot ask all foreigners to leave ,if we did there would not be a shpoworker left in Maidstone but there are many we could do without and before you call me racist that goes for British scum as well find an uninhabited island and dump the lot of them there out of good peoples way.

There are none so blind as those who WILL NOT see. Just because YOU cannot see it ,it doesnt mean it is not there. For all of my life I have been a night owl and I have seen things that nobody ought to see ,in places that nobody ought to go so thank your lucky stars that you and your 4 generations have been spared such an existence. Things though are changing and not for the good, and I am not on about f**king Brexit, this country is becoming ever more dangerous and you can probably thank the American influence for that .

I've lived in Maidstone for all but 5 of my 61 years and I certainly don't recognise the town sword describes. I've never felt threatened walking through town late at night on Fridays or Saturdays. There have always been isolated incidents down the years, and that is no different now to 40 years ago. To be honest, I feel safer in Maidstone than I have done on the odd occasion I've been in Canterbury late at night.

The other thing the town lacks is a proper university, while Canterbury has two. It would lift Maidstone out of being just another provincial town, and give an alternative scene lacking since the demise of Stepping Stone Studio. Sometimes you just want to see some original thinking and different lifestyles.

Personally I think this is a gross exaggeration. I frequently go out for evening walks, sometimes fairly late, from my home in Fant, sometimes through the town centre and sometimes other routes. I've been doing this for several years and I have never felt threatened, or been confronted, by anyone about anything. I'm not saying bad things don't happen - Maidstone is a large town, of course bad stuff happens sometimes - but statistically crime levels are actually quite low and we have no more problems than anywhere else. Even the highly-publicised recent murder in the square was caused by rival gangs from London, and not local people. If Maidstone suffers from any sort of problem, it's the perception that it is a town with issues it either doesn't have, or has in small - modest measures and certainly not at a level where it's worse than anywhere else.

π©βππ©βππ©βππ©βπ Sshh! The Swordy man asleep for once so I tell you Swordy loves Maidstone and was gutted when forced to move away to Tonbridge. Swordy loved the nightlife ,the pubs ,the people and the live music and he miss them badly. Swordy is well travelled ,though only in Britain, and he despair at places he used to enjoy visiting sliding into the abyss and it hurts him and his much experience shows him that his beloved Maidstone is beginning the long slide down to join them. You all have your opinions which is only right but Swordy speak from the heart,he does have one you know though it in many pieces.π©βππ©βππ©βππ©βπ

There is probably about 15 regular faces within the town centre which blight it for everyone else and if they were removed the town would be a fair bit cleaner. These are the usual street drinkers perched on the benches in Week Street, Jubilee square and begging outside Metrobank etc and can often be found shouting at each other and generally trying to hustle. One woman in particular is shorter than a postbox but as wide as a skip, and can often be seen lugging a kid around as well as a can of Skol so god knows how the poor mite will fair when it grows up.
The flats above Society Rooms and a block on Pudding Lane have attracted a more London based selection of dross usually found loitering in Brenchley Gardens.
I often walk through Brenchly Gardens at 8-9pm after the gym and havenβt been made to feel uneasy yet, but then Iβm double hard anyway.

Sword, I remember standing alongside you at Greenwich, around 2004. A black player was abused by one of fans, we thought, although it turned out he was a relative of one of players. You told him he was out of order and said you'd back up the victim if he wanted to make a complaint. I know you are better than this.
