Bit harsh, without his contribution at the start of last season I’m dubious we’d be playing Fylde this Saturday but more along the lines of East Thurrock.
The only thing that held him back was perhaps his attitude and perhaps loyalty which crept in eventually to his on the field performances

He was great for us and I've never quite understood why he gets so much grief. I'd have loved to have the Zavon Hines we saw early doors playing for us again.

Let's be honest, if he had been fulfilling his potential, he would never have come anywhere near Maidstone. We have unearthed a few rough gems, but most are competent journeymen. I'm grateful to most who have passed through, regardless of whether they set our world on fire.

As I have said on a different thread he is retiring from professional football that doesn't mean he will not resurface at a lower level in the future.

And as I have also said on another thread, I though Zavon was great for us, even though in world football terms he was an under achiever compared to his early promise, but if he were fit I would have loved to have him back and I think it is a great shame he has had to retire at just 30, and I wish him all the very best.

I'm grateful to most who have passed through, regardless of whether they set our world on fire. That's possibly a little unfair. In truth his career was ruined by knee problems quite early on - the constant bouts of injury made his career rather disjointed. We got a nice glimpse of what he is capable of when fit. he had two whole seasons out with knee injuries in his early 20's, which says it all. Here is an interesting article by the Derbyshire Times that sums up his spell with Chesterfield - www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/sport/football/chesterfield-fc/zavon-hines-an-enigma-who-was-both-a-source-of-hope-and-frustration-for-chesterfield-fans-1-9482414

What's made him retire? It sounds to me like he's very ill.

Sounds like a stab in dark daveu ! But Hines was a real talent that stood out from the journeyman. Had some great performances for the Stones and would loved to have seen more of him. So unlucky with his injuries. Can only wish him well in the future.
