This week's random thoughts:
the assistant referee - must have guessed the early decision for Lewington's 'handball'. The Stones' fans behind the goal had a better view and it was a close call as to whether he caught the ball outside the box (to the side) or not it wasn't clear enough with my view so how could the assistant be 100% sure? A side note to my fellow fans who gave the referee abuse for that - what else was he supposed to do? He couldn't see the lines so he had nothing to overrule the assistant on and, having given the handball, booking Lewington is 'mandatory'. Personal view at the time on their opening goal and the disallowed one shortly after. Firstly our defenders should have dealt with both and I think the assistant got both decisions wrong - the goal was offside and the disallowed one wasn't. However mine, and others, "views at the time" are notoriously unreliable and StonesTV will hopefully prove me correct or maintain my abysmal record.
Turgott and Cassidy - both still noticeably 'off the pace', presumably still affected by their injury absences. Personally would have replaced either, late on, with Embery to see if his pace worried their defenders because neither Cassidy or Turgott did.
goalkeeper distribution - kicking to the wings must be a management dictated team tactic. Stop it now ! Even ignoring their miskicks it consistently doesn't work, so try some variation and lets see if we can keep the ball on the pitch. defence* - a previous post suggested the fullbacks were ineffective. I wouldn't be that selective. Playing the equivalent of 5 central defenders and we still defended like amateur hour, especially in the first half. Collectively our defenders take too long to clear and then have to hoof or slice it clear even with enough time. Its noticeable, and has been most of the season, that we don't 'trust' the defence such that everyone goes back to help consistently conceding possession of both territory and the ball anywhere outside our box. And still we let in 2 goals !
Finally I heard the comment: "away games are much more enjoyable" and that, this season, I definitely agree with.
* having posted this I've watched Hakan's post match interview, not for the first time I don't think he and I were watching the same defence
To be fair I think the defence gets a lot of blame in this team as they are the last line, but after watching the stones this season , for me it is very obvious that the defence is always under pressure as we don't have strikers who can put away good chances and the midfield offer no protection or creativity.

Good teams do things like break quickly from defence, have attackers who hold up the ball to enable midfield to join in. They anticipate by running into space, are confident on the ball and not frightened to run at defences. Recognise any of this? Me neither. Good teams don't need to pull everyone back for free kicks and corners. Good teams know it is always an idea to have someone beyond the far post for their own corners. Ok, a bit harsh, but overall, all of the above have been noticeable by their absence for much of the season, which is why we are where we are. Not rocket science, but surprisingly elusive in the NL, where too many teams are happy with robust defence and big, intimidating players rather than skill or inventiveness. The NLS has to be better, doesn't it?

We've got to build from the back, and at least have a back 4 or 5 that is stable and doesn't leak goals.

Sorry, not a great point. An offside goal for Harrogate's first, a needless Walton penalty conceded for their second. What was really unforgivable though was playing for a draw for the last 20 minutes Indeed a strange game. Was really disappointed with Harrogate, who started so well with quick incisive passing around our box overloading full backs etc. and by the end were playing & passing as badly as we do, with misplaced passes & aimless punts + shanks - they really did run out of steam. Amaluzor's goals were worth the trip alone, breath-taking, the only ray of light this season. Other conclusions ? Need fresh full backs, Donnellan & Davies really struggled yesterday ( although against a good attack ), Simon Walton, give it up sir before you become a slow moving embarrassment. Swords ale tips spot on. Glad my tips helped you to have a great day it's just a shame I couldn't join you.

When we were last in national south we had a solid defence conceding 19 goals i think, the problem is the step up in quality finishing between the nls and nl, give someone a chance in the nl and they punish you, same situation in nls and you often get away with it. I think porky mentioned it and i agree that i prefer Davies playing that holding role in midfield more than Walton, he doesn't dive into silly tackles, wins a decent amount of tackles and keeps it simple with his distribution, helpful when defending set pieces etc and is a lot more mobile. In the harrogate game the two fullbacks were exposed a bit as we don't have wide players who track back so were often outnumbered and they also lack that bit of pace needed however as others have pointed out neither are natural full backs.

Wouldn't it be absolutely marvellous next season to actually have a natural left back and natural right back - Oh, how I long for those days!
David is OK but surely he will go back to Fulham, as will many of our other loanees?

Why would "many of our other loanees""go back to Fulham"?

Believe it or not Swaine got a 7 in the nlp Probably right. He won most things thrown into our box all afternoon (he had to !), as they continuously sent in crosses and throws. I'm not a great lover of Swaine, but he did have one of his better games, whatever that means.

I also agree with some others on this forum that solid, and dedicated right and left back positions need to be filled. Their number 11 was able to get too much joy getting crosses in from their left flank with ease. The match definately echoed the thoughts of JS with regard to the balance in the team in certain areas not being right at the mo.

Not convinced that we ever replaced Anderson with a better player. Nor Seth come to that ! What a season for letting decent players go and replacing them with inferior talent.

At the time I didn't think Anderson was good enough, but wasnt expecting this seasons car crash, and realise now we probably needed him. And Seth. And Josh Hare.
However we cant look back now!
How about going on the other thread and having a punt at your take on which PLAYERS should stay and go?
