I thought "fair shoulder charges" went out with Nat Lofthouse?

Back to the game, having seen the highlights, the ref got both penalty shouts right. Richards' was as fair a shoulder charge as you'll ever see and their player simply lost his balance with little or no contact. He did - he just fell over! Even the City fans were a bit half-hearted in their penalty claims.

Not one I would choose to contest given the general standard of reffing we get, but I would challenge the description of "as fair a shoulder charge as you'll ever see" - I thought "fair shoulder charges" were about a tussle to get to a 50:50 ball, that one was a clear case of "I'm gonna the little fellah on the deck, so I don't have to contest the ball" -looked like a decent penalty shout to me (and possible charge of assault) but hey what do I know?
On a subject I'm sure we can agree on - those two diagonals from Muldoon were sublime. Doesn't matter the standard of the opposition balls like that will work every- time.

Watching the United-Spurs game on MOTD, Pogba played an almost identical ball to Rashford. Very strange to see two examples of Premier League (or better) quality in a game of such overall poor quality.

It's football like that that I watch games for. Winning is key, obviously, but it's the quality of football that really matters. The best games I've ever seen live were the DiCanio years at West Ham - I used to go to games, knowing that, whatever the outcome, I would see some simply stunning football (and not just from DiCanio himself - a player like that raises everyone's game). Obviously, I don't expect to see that sort of thing at our level, but there's no reason not to expect the sort of football Muldoon (and a few others in our squad) can produce. I would love coaches to encourage and concentrate on that sort of thing. OK, winning games, however it's done, is more important, but good football usually does win games - and it certainly brings the punters in.

Seen from the Town End, the challenge on Richards looked 50/50 as a shoulder to shoulder, but as Richards is smaller, he got flattened. Seen from behind in the highlights, to me it looks more like he shouldered Richards in the back. Very similar to the challenge that got AT booked second half. Shame the scuffle that got Romain booked first half wasn't on the highlights. Their defender all over him like a rash and with his arm round his throat. Then had the temerity to complain to the linesman that Elliot was at fault! Just another example of how poor refereeing is at this level. Whether the bookings will count against us in the long run is anyone's guess.
