Remind me - is this the same Dagenham who were 22nd at the time of this piece, and are now 15th?

Interesting interview (check 2.50 mark onwards) which pretty much explains why we got Worner, Wishart and now Taylor off them.

Sounds like the Sutton budget is probably about the same or less than Stones. Just shows how it can be done !

At the NYE event, when discussing Sheilds, Tristan made a comment something along the lines of "the same upgrade at a lower price" - I thought at the time this was a clear hint that they had something in progress and now I think we have the answer.

Ironically, the squad JS put together at the start of the season was I think his first step in trying to emulate what Doswell had done in assembling a core squad that would be around for multiple seasons.
Paxman, Richards, Philips, Mclennan, Muldoon and Turgott are the only survivors of that idea (and I doubt JS really thought Blair would stay for multiple seasons to come)

Shame our core group weren't even close to the standard of player Doswell manages to sign at Sutton. I dunno how he does it, but he somehow manages to put together good teams on small budgets. Meanwhile we seem to proper struggle attracting decent players to sign for us.

I have a lot of time for Doswell, fantastic manager and hearing him speak about the turnover of players each year and loss of your best players yet still remain competitive and stable in the league shows how important a quality manager is to a club. If Sutton lost him I suspect they would be in a similar situation we currently face.

It's "water under the bridge" now, but I actually don't think that Jay's squad was that far from being fit for purpose. (Probably actually closer than we have today). Clearly Mullings & Quigley didn't work out, but we haven't found anyone permanent to replace them yet.
Looking at our results vs Sutton - since they played us of the park late in the promotion season we are played 5 W 2 D 2 L1 GF 7 GA 5. So I don't think our achievements are too far removed. (Yes I know about league position)
I am though impressed by what Doswell achieves in an understated manner and having dispensed with someone who was trying to emulate it earlier in the season I think our current incumbents could well be the closest option on offer.

He reminds me of Jay, same sort of down-to-earth honesty - not the PR bullshit we got from Harry.

Sutton are closer to the London catchment area for players, with full time clubs nearby.
I'm usually sceptical when people say a side is three or four players from success, but we don't have anything to lose testing the hypothesis. We have learned they can be offloaded quickly enough if needs be. The only question is whether it's still one in one out, or will the purse strings be loosened in the bid for survival?

It's not just London - other NL clubs seen more able to get Championship/PL loanees, the best we can do seems to be NL. Imagine what an U23 striker from a Prem club could do for us...
