On the game itself...
I agree with the general consensus that we weren’t bad for the first 20 minutes or so, decent possession, some nice passing, a cracking shot on goal from Pax. It all looked very good. Lacking a bit in end result, as per, but otherwise quite encouraging.
Then the goal. To me it didn't look like it was down to the defence, it was just one of those - bloke got the ball, looked up, saw a chance, and whacked in a screamer. These things happen - regroup, heads up, and carry on as we were. Which is more or less what we did. Until the cock-up that led to their 2nd.
And then the unbelievable Bollix that gifted them the third...
Half time and a chorus of boos. The natives weren't happy. But there were a lot more of them than I thought - over 2,000, in fact. Where were they? Not at our end of the stand, that's for sure. And, oddly, there were 5 more Heed fans than the announcer said - how did they get in?
I was still queuing for chips when the second half started, but I wasn't exactly in a hurry to get back. When we did, the old Stones were back on the pitch - pump it aimlessly forward, get it back, pump it forward again. Gateshead had given up bothering and were just getting a bit of practise in, bring on the subs, let's all have a game. And still we couldn't score. Robinson? Well may you ask. Unfair to judge him on one outing, perhaps, but for me he is a typical lower-league goal scorer, playing a league above his ability. NL defences eat players like him for fun.
And then, disaster, we score - twice! 0-3 (or worse) and perhaps that would have been it for Harry. 2-3 and on we go…
Positives? The Peter Overton minutes applause was moving - nice touch to have a photo of him on the scoreboard. Cassidy got his goal at last. Thanks Jake, you were one of the brighter moments of this season. Oh, and the chips were good.

Comes to something when the only positive things to be said about a game are that the chips were good, while two of the biggest negatives were the fact that we actually managed to score twice. Hard not to agree, though I quite enjoyed my Mars bar.

Well I have now had a few beers and a bit of headbanging session and so I now feel it is right to give my view on the game today. We started out positively pinging the ball about here and there and looked a bit useful for a while but this was my first real look at Robinson and I didn't realise what a short arse he is but more worryingly I didn't realise how slow he is . He has no pace which he may get away with in the league below but will not serve him very well in this division. He may though score goals if he is in the right place after all Mo Takaloo was slower than my tortoise but knew where the goal was. As well as we started we still didn't really threaten the Heed keeper and then they scored from distance and I think Worner should have done better with it but he just seemed to flap his hands at the ball. The second was a quality drive that was in the minute it left his foot. The third was yet another defensive f**k up but by then the game was already over. When we scored I couldn't even be bothered to applaud cos I was so dejected and when we got a second i became very disillusioned at the fact we were going to lose again but that one goal has probably saved Harry from the Gooner foe anther week. It was good to see Cassidy score again and we will truly miss him swhen he returns to the monkey hangers. Paxman wasnt good today and Walton was awful though very animated at times. Overall a 5% improvement but we still lost.

The ref is a little bastard. Ain’t we had him a couple of times already this season. Sees free kicks where there are none. It’s a f**king joke

Yes. But why didn't we get out fair share?

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but Shamir Mullings was in the bar after the game...

Sham could be the big man we need up top when Cass leaves. Makes sense..ideal player to get on the end of Shields' excellent crosses. Unless you just want Harry to keep bringing in more players. Get Loza back too after he's played against Watford.

Loza? Yes, because he has already proved himself at this level. As for the rest, in the gloom of this morning, I find myself wondering, for all the fact that they are supposed to be better than Jay's squad, just how many of the current players would be first team regulars in any other NPL side? Cassidy, you'd think so, especially as Hartlepool now want him back. Romain? Works really hard, but clearly not a regular scorer. Shields? Enough to suggest he can do a job at this level. Robinson? Unproven. Midfield? As the area we are weakest in, you doubt any could hold down a regular place elsewhere. Defence? With all Wheeler's meddling, who knows? Not sure he does either. The keeper is ok, but was second choice at Sutton remember. So, thinking about it, are the players Wheeler has brought in actually any better than those we had at the end of last season? Until we see what a different manager can do with them, it is hard to tell, bit I'm starting to have my doubts. The only player to have done equally well under Wheeler and Saunders is Turgott - clearly capable of playing in a higher league. As for the rest, if they had enough about them, then surely we would be seeing at least some flair and individuality? But we aren't, which is why I wonder. Sadly, the only quality players we have been able to attract have burnt out fairly quickly (eg Prestige, Lewis), have been snapped up elsewhere (Pigott, Hines), or have simply proved to be ordinary, at best. Why is it that other teams in our league can attract better players? It can't all be about money - can it? If so, then until we can get a lot more, one wonders if we are better off in the NLS? Better a big fish in a small pond, than feeding off scraps as we are now? Only if we get an experienced manager, and soon, will we know if these players are good enough, because Wheeler hasn't been able to make the most of them.

Worner only lost his starting place at Sutton through injury. For me he's about the same level as Worgs. Good shot stopper but doesn't really command his area enough.

He's not exactly impressed, though, has he? Flaps and punches, positioning dodgy Nowhere near as solid and reliable as Smith, and, in my view, not as good as Worgan.
