Spunking millions on a club only makes sense if you're in it for the long-term. Even if you make it into the ELF (unlike, erm, let me think - oh yes - Ebbsfleet!), you don't suddenly start coining it in. Gates may go up a bit, but so too do all the matchday expenses and general costs to run the club, and the TV money isn't enough to cover the sort of silly money Fleet have been spending. Unless the owners/investors are prepared to keep pumping in vast sums for years (FGR?), or you're a big club with EFL type gates, your own, EFL standard ground, etc, sooner or later it's all going to go Pete Tong (R&D - and many others). This, unfortunately, means there isn't much hope of a sustained run in the EFL for most non-league clubs (assuming they can get there to start with). If you can increase gates substantially, and if you're prapared to spend a long time mid and lower table in L2, trying to maintain a sustainable budget, your days are basically numbered. Big club going back up, or small club with a long-term sugar daddy - probably OK. Small club (with or without sugar daddy) - enjoy it while it lasts. Which probably won't be for long. i think in most instances you also need a certain number of people in your catchment area to get sufficient bums on seats. The money /reward getting to EFL isn't bad-roughly £500K for 'membership' and £500k TV money . Believe it or not-the check a trade trophy is also quite a money spinner-£20K for winning each game in the mini league, and then another £20k if you win that mini league-thats before the next round,so you can understand why some owners do 'gamble'. In FGR's case-you are correct - Dale Vince did invest plenty of money for the first 6 years, whilst they got their longer term sustainable model working, which is to recruit up and coming and sell for big profit.(every one says it-fgr do it -the recruitment is carefully planned .It wont work every season, but over the last three it has with about 5 major transfer fees over that time-and the club are now 'in profit '

Some interesting figures.
Imagine the good you could do for society with that kind of money.

I believe the best way forward for the club would be to reinstall Daryl as manager & give him next season to prove what a catastrophic mistake it was to sack him in the first place !

Harry Wheeler would be a more suitable candidate for the Fleet. Let's face it, he has experience in abundance, and he knows how to appoint and motivate the right players to do the job. Promotion would be guaranteed. You know it makes sense.

The clown knows how to work with weird owners so would be perfect for Gravesend and Id SO enjoy us passing them as we come back up and they go down. Perfect solution all round.
