Just seen a news article on BBC Breakfast (started 7.21am) from Hendon FC. Interestingly, they have announced they are giving away free entry to all home games this season for any fan diagnosed with mental health issues / depression. Discussion as to how this could work / affect gate receipts at the Stones?!

Shouldn't joke about such serious issues, but if you are wrestling with depression I reckon the last thing you'd need is a repeat sentence watching MUFC at the moment

Indeed, shades of 'first prize, one free ticket, second prize, two free tickets etc'. Also the phrase - you don't have to be mad to... but it certainly helps - also springs to mind.

They should seriously consider the most frequent posters on this forum for being recipients for free tickets - although for dealing with anger management issues. Hendon , Everton are showing a side to them that I never knew they had. Congratulations !

I ,as you have probably worked out ,like a bit of a laugh but my humour is just a defence mechanism for me to try and forget the fact that i have been suicidal in recent years. Depression is a serious illness that never goes away it just hides under the skin ready to destroy you on another day and unless you suffer from it you can never understand what it feels like.As for free tickets to Maidstone well I would qualify but I would not ask for them nor would I accept them as a gifts it would not help one little bit .

Seriously though (if that allowed?) as mentioned by jt how would you prove this. Everyone is somewhere along the mentally well or unwell spectrum. Having suffered depression for many years, do I really want to have o take my letter from the GP / counsellor to the turnstile, when all I want is to enjoy a trip to my local football club?

A related event, Top PR MUFC, well done ( copied from twitter ): 'Dad contacted @maidstoneunited to see if they could do anything for a friend of his who isn't well and, like myself and my dad, is a big fan of the club. Didn't expect much but after receiving this today we were blown away and we know Darryl will be too! ' Top gesture COYS ! twitter.com/olivernjash

I wouldn't have a clue as to the mechanics of how this works but good luck to those that are trying. A fabulous gesture. It is just these small kinds of cooperation in their thousands and millions that will help lead to a more cohesive, understanding and beneficial human society, banishing the politics of hatred to the dustbin. More of it. Jokes aside on mental illness, it is a serious issue that is, unfortunately, taken seriously in name only by our leaders. I get to speak to CAMHS people regularly - privately and professionally - and the story of their jobs and pressures is not good at all.

How do you prove it though Quite - or as sps expresses it, would you want to take a GP letter to the turnstile and have to shout above the hubbub "I'm bipolar, can I have a free ticket please?" I've recently given up applying for disability benefit on behalf of a family member with mental health issues - the whole system is designed for people with physical disability so if you can walk and feed yourself, even if you will never be able to work because of your mental condition, they reject you.

The only encouraging thing is that there is a slow move towards recognition of such illnesses and how disabling they can be, particularly in the world of work and interaction with others. I suppose we are talking about a monumental shift in social attitudes. However, when I think about the shift in social attitudes to gay people, racism etc that have happened in my lifetime there is hope. My only understanding of how people with mental illness might feel in relation to work and not being fit for it is when my jippy back plays up and I have to be off .

While this is a very worthwhile attempt by this club to give attention to mental health issues, I fear it could lead to a mass complaint by people with various types of disabilities questioning why they are not entitled to free entry.

Some odd replies. But to get a free ticket at Hendon you simply email the Club chairman.

Never give up it took me 3 years but I eventually won . If you give up then that is what they want, appeal, appeal and appeal again you will win
